Definitely past it's prime. Opened for my sister's 30th birthday. Almost no fruit notes left. Cork was in great shape, less sediment than I expected given the age.

Layered bleeding to the edge. Lovely nose of cigar box and plum skins with some candied high notes completing the bouquet. Subtle -- different in a good way. Delicious fruit and spice in decent volume. Achieves an excellent balance of power and finesse. This is the good stuff.

Sampled 6/13/12 from DOUBLE MAGNUM. Color is still quite young. Cassis and blackberries up front. Slighly sour black cherries on finish. Some faint leather and tobacco notes. Some Oak. The acidity was a bit high for me, which took it down a point, but the tannins in this format while still firm are smooth. A very nice wine.

Just added to CT. Last opened this vintage in 2008. Enjoyed with a juicy steak. Wanting to open the one in the cellar, but it is our last and apparently it is at or near its peak. What to do? We have to open this bottle soon with Jack, the person who gave it to me.

Big wine with plenty of juice left. Surprisingly dark for a 20 year old bottle. Eucalyptus, tobacco, maybe a touch of chocolate both in bouquet and on the palate, some spice in the finish. Nice mouthfeel, balanced with heavy mid-palate and fairly long finish; tannins present but light. Tasted this after the 1986 (which was also impressive, drink now), but the 1990 was clearly better, and based on this tasting should hold for another 10 years.

Very forward nose; quite complex with dark fruit, cedar and light touch of leather. Almost no tannins left, yet the wine had an underlaying structure and good mouth feel. Long finish. Very nice match to a braised lamb shank. Time to drink up.

Not decanted. Definitely showing some age with prominent bricking, althought it wasn't brown. At first this wine sang- great mint/eucalyptus nose, terrific medium body and a nice finish. After about 1 1/2- to 2 hours it started to fade, leading to slightly tart cranberry flavors and losing its fruit. Time to drink now. This rating is based on the first hour or so of this wine.

Opened on Open That Bottle Night (OTBN8) with Devin & Shannon McGranahan at their house on Lake Chautauqua. COLOR - full-bodied color, but red has yielded around the edges to some browns. NOSE - wow, this nose is INTENSE with a mixed "spice drawer" character that is very attractive - I smell cumin, oregano, cinnamon, and many others. TASTE - a bit more vinyl than fruit flavors, although very full-bodied on the palate; there are still some very small tannins here, but the fruit seems to be almost gone; pleasant to drink a wine so old, and would love to eat this with a spicier meat dish. RATING - 89.

Excellent, but not quite the experience of the 1989. Expected 90 to be even better then 89; so I was surprised. Not disappointed, though. 'cause this is also a great bottle.

Long dead....purchased at auction with hopes for anniversary dinner, 2 bottles opened with similar experience - all bouillon, acid, and vinegar.

Let it breathe for 2 hours. Much better then. Slightly past its prime but still good. Even better after 4 hours.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind alongside the 1991. Both came across as well past their peaks and/or stewed.

Cork totally disintegrated. Brown, cloudy, uh-oh. Caramel, unusually tannic, dry berry, mature, astringent, stewy plum. Heat damage? A Winebid purchase. Dumped.
