Another good but not great showing. Fragrant and interesting, but not that rich and ripe and seems a little lacking in weight for the price. Not sure I would buy these again.

This wine from the '98 vintage is what turned me on to Viognier back in the day, so I was really disappointed to drink through three bottles of this vintage over a year or so and never say 'wow' to myself while drinking it. There are a lot of great big hitter new world Rhone whites out there from Paso, Walla Walla, etc - and based on this vintage, the Cayuse Cailloux aint one of them. My score is based on the missed potential of the vineyard and the wine maker. My main thoughts are that the wine lacked minerality, compelling acidity or typicity. Maybe these bottles were not well handled?

Light fresh, but initially lacking in structure and depth. More light bodied and Sauvignon like. After 24 hours of air, this was showing much more body and interest. Ripe and rich with good viscosity, fragrant and interesting.

Paired with scallops sauteed with butter mustard lemon sauce over aromatic rice. An incredible viognier with rich honeyed notes, jasmine, honeysuckle very aromatic. An incredible expression of terroir with mineral, rocks, granite. One of the best examples of viognier I have ever tasted. Ex-Ray you need to try this again with a better food paring.

Medium intensity aroma, not particularly distinctive, unlike NZ sauvignon blancs or many chardonnays. Hard to describe, not fruity or floral, just unusual. Full-bodied, rich, mouth-coating, very nice but very distinctive. We love their reds, but I wouldn't buy more of this, especially at their price. Ric

Tight, crisp floral, slightly citrusy fruit, excellent structure, short finish
