Wine tasting with friends. I brought this Daou as part of a vertical 2010, 2011, 2012. The 2010 was the star by all criteria (nose, mouth feel, balance, finish). The 2011 showed higher acid and less fruit. The 2012 was getting there on the overall.

Should be decanted for sediment and aeration. After decanting for two hours, the nose showed some dark red fruits, charcoal and a whiff of green pepper. On the palate, the earthy notes surpassed the dark red fruits, along with a touch of spice and green pepper. All in a medium to plus bodied wine, with some faint tannins, and sturdy acidity. I would suggest drinking up in the next year or two.

Followed this for about 8 hours open, which was enough to get it to show its worth. Very dark ruby-violet color, about 90% opaque. Super slow legs and a heavy dose of sediment. 70% Cab Franc/30% Merlot seems appropriately represented in the bouquet, with a little herbaceousness leading off and picked up later by plums and tobacco. The tannins no longer dominate the palate and there's still a generous lift of acidity. However, it is somewhat nondescript and ubiquitous as far as complexity but that's what would also make it perfectly suitable for many restaurant wine lists. Now hitting the prime of its life and will cruise for a few more years. 5+11+16+8= 90

Nice, better on day 2 as the tannins smoothed out. Good fruit with a dusty component. I'm happy with it at the $28 I paid, but wouldn't be if it was much more.

Popped and followed for about 2 hours open. It stayed pretty tight during that time and never really showed much more than fair to middlin'. Perhaps with more air or cellar time it comes around but as it was, I would score 88-89

Daou's 2011, 1740! Tasted on March 13, 2012 (13/13/13..must be an auspicious day). This years blend is 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot, as opposed to last years which had slightly less Cab Franc and more Merlot. Wonderful aromatic nose....slightly astringent but that disappears after a few minutes. This is a beautiful, dark wine. Jammy with lots of interwoven scents and flavors. Definite black cherry, dark plum and raspberry, somewhat peppery with some smokiness and leather. Intense flavors. A LONG...lingering finish. RE-TASTED the following day, and the flavors had smoothed out nicely. The tannins need time to level out. A MUCH more intense, fully flavored and interesting wine than the 2010...which (IMO) was GREAT. I rated this a 93 ONLY because this was just bottled and is obviously suffering from some bottle shock. Needs some months in the bottle. Will re-taste in several months and fully expect it to exceed last years ratings. Judging from the characteristic change in 24 hours....give this bottle 6 months and it's a WOWZER! This is just a CRAZY great, complex, tasty, chewy, jammy wine. IF you open a bottle now...I'd suggest a several hour decant. Another Daoucredible release.

It is with this wine that we began to perceive the outstandingly promising Cab Franc from Daou.

Garnet color. Plum, dark cherry, and vanilla aromas. Dark fruit, tobacco, oak, and spice flavors. Long soft finish.

More jammy than I anticipated, deep purple, not super complex but a good wine. Would pair well with some red meat or even good pizza.
