Heavy, jammy fruit with an unctiously sweet finish interrupted only by a faint whiff of dust and beef boullion. Very surprised at this kind of showing from vintage '98.

The time to drink this is over. Still holding up OK, but fruit is fading. Balanced and nice, but not what it likely was 3-5 years ago. This was my last bottle of this. Out with the old and in with the new

Surprisingly old word. Black currants and subdued clove nose. Dry cherry and cocoa up front with a dry, chocolaty finish. Strange how Caymus ages into a completely different wine than in its youth.

Paired with seared duck breast appetizer, and Kobe New York strip entree. Ruby colored. Scrumptious nose. Cherries, red currants. Smooth - Tannins nicely subdued. Love Caymus! Don't wait any longer to drink.

Dissappointing. Just not much of any fruit left in this wine at all. Consumed over 4 hours, and aerated at times as well. Just not much there. Could it be in a dumb phase and closed? Hoping it would open up, but just not happening. After 3.5 hours, got a hint of eucalyptus, but then it disappeared.

(HK L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon lunch) Somewhat subdued Cali cab probably due to age, which was nice for my taste. Dark colour, dark fruit nose, mild bacon aromas after a while in the glass. Full bodied with quite sharp acidity and moderate tannins. I think this wine can still keep for a while, but I can't see it improving much more in complexity. On the down side the wine was a bit short in the balance department.

Clear, deep burgundy core, tawny edges. Clean nose, medium + intense, some development. A bit hard to get anything out of it, but after a little time and more temperature, some black currant, plum, oak, stable and maybe a touch of sweet tobacco, which joins in the with overall impression of juiciness and some sweetness to the fruit. Fresh, medium + bodied, medium + acidity, medium tannins, dry, balanced, much the same aromas as on the nose, but confirms the impression of juiciness and sweetness. Medium length on the finish.
This was served blind, after a little bit of reasoning I ended up in right-bank Bordeaux, but also suggested it could be a cool-year in a warmer climate.

opened 3 hours prior to pour; nice roundness and mouthfeel - silky; cassis, barnyard and muted oaked fruit. Not the best Caymus I ever tasted but certainly shows its pedigree.

Not much of an impression with this one. Drank with a 1994 Caymus and this one did not stand out in any way. Nothing special but does taste like a good quality cab.

Moderately dark red color with moderate bricking along the rim. Nose of an aged wine with forest floor, sweet fruit, bright berry. Palate still rich and somewhat viscous. Still lots of wood, sweetness. Moderately long palate. A bit hot, but still sweet. Some lead pencil pops out on the long finish.

Dark ruby color with bricking at the edges. Beautiful Bordelais nose of blackberries, cassis, some earth, pencil lead, leather. Palate was similar. Some spice and tar though the finish was just a tad bitter. Not a huge wine but elegant. I don't think this will further develop much in the bottle.

We tasted the 1997 and 1998 Caymus side by side. Both wines had deep red color and good body. The 1998 was a bit rough and really did not taste all that good. I considered this one corked. The 1997 was nice from the start and got better as time went on. After an hour it was soft, it had more dark fruit and chocolate type flavors. Very nice!

Drank side by side during Superbowl gathering. The 92 LaTour was still good, it was light in color and body but had some rutherford bench dust and light fruit flavors. The Caymus had better color and more body. The Caymus was equally enjoyable. The Heitz Napa evolved more than the others over the time it was open. At the begining it was not pleasant, it had a green bell pepper type flavors but after an hour it became more soft and less green. I still think for the money a great value.

The wine showed sediment, but was clean when decanted. Deep rich color, with a faint, subtle nose. The wine exhibited balanced flavors yet it was not as full or as supple as expected. The mouthfeel was light but balanced, and it worked well with our dinner. The finish was round, simple and relatively short. I would not hold this wine. drink it now.

The cork showed no sign of bleeding so I had great hopes for this bottle, but they didn't pan out. On the nose, all the bouquet was there, but in the mouth it proved much lighter than the typcial Caymus - it was missing the weight that I love with this wine. Perhaps a little hollow. There was no sign of sediment as it was decanted. Have 1 bottle left so will be drinking up soon.

An unfortunate, I'm drunk and want more wine evening... Sad waking up to a 1/2 consumed bottle of Caymus. At least someone had the sense to pour it back into the bottle and stick the cork in.

Did not decant. The nose smells of cherry and chocolate mint. Medium red color with a slight tinge of brown. Tastes a little hot that did not burn off over time. Thin with a medium body with hints of chocolate and eucalyptus. Very short finish. Overall, average to good example of Napa Cab. I am not disappointed that this is my last bottle.

New Year's Eve 2008 with Friends: Caymus 1996.97.98.99 plus a few special guests (B & N Ranch): This was the third Caymus of the night, following the 1996, 1997..tough acts to follow. Drew a blank trying to come up with solid descriptors for the nose, muted. Mid-pa;ate was a bit light and the finish seemed abrupt. It just did not register as Caymus-caliber tonight... 88.
