Piedmont 2013, Day 2 - Dinner with Walter Massa of Vignetti Massa (Ristorante Bovio, La Morra, Piedmont, Italy): I really liked this – a lot stronger than the 2001 that preceded it, the nose was still very expressive here, with nice black fruited aromas wreathed in some smoke and tar. Nice. The palate seemed a good decade younger than the 2001 as well. It had very nice, clean black fruited expression on a bed of smoke meat. Juicy acidity and very fine tannins gave it all a lovely sense of balanced and structure. Good long finish too, drifting off with a spicy kiss. We had many Barberas over our few days in Piedmont, and although this admittedly had the benefit of some age under its belt, it was definitely one of the best amongst them. Drinking well and very good indeed.

Vigneti Massa winery visit (Monleale, Tortona): dark red-black, intense concentrated fruity aroma & flavours, heavy fruits, sour flavours, long finish.
nothing like the Barbera I knew from Alba or Asti….
