Piedmont 2013, Day 3 - Visit to Giuseppe Cortese (Rabajà, Babaresco, Piedmont, Italy): Aged in some oak, this was more serious than the basic Langhe Chardonnay that preceded it. Still though, this was decent rather than really good. It had a nice nose, with a touch of sweet oak notes floating around sweet citrus fruit and chalky mineral notes. The palate was very fresh and lively, with a mouth-wateringly citrusy attack moving into appley notes on the midpalate. There was lots of mineral and a touch of spice at the finish, trailing away into a popcorny suggestion of oak.

Piedmont 2013, Day 3 - Visit to Giuseppe Cortese (Rabajà, Babaresco, Piedmont, Italy): Okay, but a little ho-hum. A Chardonnay entirely vinified and aged in steel, with malolactic left incomplete, this was clearly made to be an easy-drinking, entry-level wine. The nose showed off the style quite clearly, with grass scents, along with lime, green apple and a whiff of chalk. The palate was marked by lots of aicidty, almost Super Lemon Candy sour on the attack, before calming down into green apple midpalate with a little mineral bite at the finish. Decently drinkable, very refreshing on a blazingly hot day in Piedmont (it was 34 degrees with not a cloud in the sky), but really simple.

Very oaky and smokey, but still very enjoyable.
