Second bottle just as good if not better than the first. Jammy, with raspberry and blackberry notes. A really good wine for the price. Gets better if you let it breath for about an hour. I found it for $8, great QPR.

color: medium purple-velvet; nose: some oak and earth; taste: medium-bodied slightly vegetal taste, medium-length finish with pleasant but lean tannins; overall: fairly ordinary, undistinguished juice as of summer 2015 -- would pair OK with fatty meat, e.g. grilled burgers -- and has potential for better days ahead in two or three years.

Almost non-existent nose - maybe some earth. Some nice cherry and some herbs with decent vanillin/oak integration, resulting in a chocolatey flavor. Mostly oak on the finish. Overall not bad for the price, but lacking character.

This was surprisingly good for a mass produced, under $10 bottle of wine. Medium bodied, clear cherry color. Nothing special in the nose or finish, but it was smooth, tasty, easy to drink. Easily as good as other wines twice the price.

The second day was better than the first, with sweet tobacco and berries on the nose. Full bodied, with juicy berries and sweet tobacco on the palette, along with a subtle, creamy chocolate on the finish. This goes really well with extra sharp cheese!

Baking spices on the nose, along with eucalyptus, a touch of oak and more than a touch of alcohol heat. Bright acidity with some more oak on the palate. Opened up nicely into a juicy black cherry flavor, but still with high acidity that feels a bit out of whack. Have one more bottle, will probably wait until late 2015.

A nose of some dark fruit and spice, medium garnet in color. A medium bodied red, with black cherry, herbs, some spices on finish, a good value. www.winelx.com

This wine has been on Wine Spectator best-value lists and is highly rated here, so I had high expectations. I was not really impressed, though. Aerated into decanter and saw a nice, garnet color on the pour. Nose had a lot of coconut, toast, and vanilla...definitely all oak. Palate was medium-bodied, but thin, with acidic vanilla on the attack, a diluted midpalate devoid of fruit, and a finish that was either not present or totally hidden by hot, strong, gritty tannins.
Here's my theory: this merlot was over-produced (high yield), giving little sugar and no flavor to the juice, and was therefore chaptalized and over-oaked to give it the semblance of body and flavor. This would explain what we tasted in this wine, the heat, and the utter lack of typicity.
Even so, this wine is drinkable and not bad with fatty food (to keep the strong tannins in check), so we give this an average-to-good rating of 81/100.
This one really benefited from an overnight in the decanter. When we opened it last night, there was a slight amount of "Old Word" earthy, vegetative aroma and flavor. That all burned off overnight. This is not a concentrated, layered red wine, actually it is kind of simple. Still clean and well made. Quite fruity, mostly red raspberry and other red fruit. The mid palate sneaks up on you and convinced me to raise the score a point. We taste and feel some oak. Dry tannins. Young acid that could benefit from one more year in the bottle. Just a touch short on the concentration of flavors, but still not bad for the price.

My second bottle of this, BIG improvement over the first one. Much more in keeping with the expectations for the 2012 vintage. Highly viscous, copious fruit. Awesome QPR.

Bogle (cab, merlot, PN) used to be my house wine and I still go through a lot of it. Was very eager to try the 2012 vintage due to the 2012 California hype and picked up a few bottles. Surprisingly, this was thin, with bubble-gum-ish fruit aromas. If I were drinking this 'blind,' I would have guessed maybe Beaujolais nouveau. I will try another bottle to check for bottle variation but based on this one I think I will hold to serve to guests who aren't big wine drinkers.

Reminded me more of a blend than a full Merlot. Nice legs but the overall flavor was a little flat. Not much on either side for fruits.
