Friday Night Burgs (Margeaux Brasserie): Sensational Volnay that is at once so young, forward and ripe and also layered and complex. Black cherry with smoke, florals and spice. Wow. So long, so fresh.

Burgundies at Margeaux Brasserie (Chicago, IL): This bottle was absolutely stunning. Incredibly youthful for its age, with a really lovely red-fruit-driven disposition, followed with a moderate amount of spice. I've disliked some of the Lafon Volnays for showing too much oak, but it has integrated very well here.

From magnum. This bottle was slightly off although showed good underlying material. Even with its flaws, this bottle was still on a much slower evolutionary curve than the '85

Role Reversal Lunch at La Paulée-Dujac Whites (Monts-Luisants) and Lafon Reds (Quince, San Francisco): Magnum. Lighter ruby, maturing rim. Not completely clean nose-pungent camphor, barnyard, and celery stalk. Musty, gamy, medium bodied wine, much more prominent acidity than the 2000. Interestingly, the fruit underneath remains strong and sweet, but the finish is gritty and a bit impure. This was the outlier of the day in terms of its real funkiness. Not very enjoyable.

Jasper Volnay. Very, very clean and pretty. Translucent ruby. Floral and lifted aromatics with sweet palate.

Big Pinot Tasting: Nice nose of freshly plowed earth. Some dark fruits, but a bit of a metallic finish that detracted.
