Something happened to this vintage and I couldn't drink it. It has deteriorated into a mess of juice with spikes of disjointed acid. Perhaps a bad bottle of a previously good vintage? But I'm not the only one. On the same night, I tried a 2006 it was fine.

Vertical tasting of Elan Vineyards Atlas Peak Cabernet 2011-2012-2013 at Perrone's Restaurant in Pawleys Island, SC.
2011 - Decanted. Elegant and restrained with a muted nose of black fruit with tannins that were extremely soft but left an aftertaste of chalk and mineral. Excellent with duck and sweet carrots. Not going to last long as the 12 or 13.
2012 - Decanted. More of everything compared to the 11. Darker with more depth of fruit and hefty tannins that create a chewy mouthfeel. The wine really popped with the fatty bits of a 45 day dry aged steak. It'll be interesting to see what happens to this wine over time.
2013 - Not Decanted. In your face Napa cab. Dark in the glass. Smooth tannins well integrated with blue & back berries on the palate. Absolutely brilliant wine that is built for the long haul. The star of the night!

Nose of elegant fruit, (dominating blueberry?), more of the same in the mouth, with soft tannin and a bit of acid. Medium finish. As the wine progressed in the glass, I found myself wanting a bit more acid and tannin to provide some balance and to match the food. The fruit is not overdone or overripe, making for an elegant, soft package. Drink now or wait a few years.

Fading tannins and low acid make this fruit juice. While other 2011's have had some life, this bottling is not one of them. Drink now.

Color: deep purple
Nose: blackberries and cassis, baked black fruit, green pepper, vegetal notes that make me think of a fresh bottle of rubber cement
Taste: dark red fruit, medium tannins, white pepper, smooth
Finish: medium-dark chocolate covered small coffee bean, medium+ finish length
Overall: excellent. Easily has 10 more years in the bottle
