  • Three Chardonnays at home (Wellington, NZ): Deeper gold than the 2016 Dauvissat Les Clos but no premox or abnormal oxidation. The Vaulorent was not helped by being drunk beside the last of the Les Clos. It did have Grand Cru weight, structure and volume but not the elegance, piercing chalky minerality, salinity and fine citrus of the Les Clos. It was more earthbound with cruder, green apple acidity. On palate it was more orchard fruit – pear, peach, yellow and some green apple – than citrus fruit with ginger and touches of pineapple and honey, finishing on a little apricot kernel bitterness. Dense and tactile in the mouth. Perhaps lacking a little Chablis typicity but a decent Chardonnay. Overall, a little disappointing. Drink soon.

  • Excellent example of Vaulorent. Grand Cru level weight and depth. Great acidity, slightly lactic, full of minerals and oyster-y goodness. No oak poking out. Just delicious right now. Enjoyed at Hog Island with a tray of sweetwaters. Typical Piuze.
