2013 Abeja Syrah

  • Good wine, well integrated at this point. Smoky, tobacco, meat, some syrah spice, not overpowering, but does have a medium to long finish where it just coats your tongue. Good wine

  • Sneaky length; starts slow, then opens expansively in the mid-palate and then just never stops! Drinking well, now, with a little room to further harmonize.

  • This was my first Abeja Syrah and first WA Syrah from the 2013 vintage so I sacrificed one infant bottle in the name of self-education. Drank over 2 days with a vacu-vin overnight.

First day: Tooth staining dark purple color. Nose had dark fruit and spice (cinnamon & clove). Flavors of dark berries, plum and baking spice. Plush texture but a little tight both straight from the bottle and on my second glass which had been decanted for 30 minutes to an hour. A hint of heat on the medium finish. High 80s to 90 for a score.

Second day: Similar nose and flavor profile. It has opened up and has a smoother more expressive finish and I'm not noticing the heat on the second day.

I'll probably hold off a year or two to open another bottle. If I was planning to drink now I would decant for at least a couple hours.
