  • Brought to dinner with Elmar and Mascha. The light- to medium-bodied wine was light ruby in colour and offered lovely red fruit, red cherry, earth, leather, spices, a hint of vanilla, coffee and tea on the nose and palate, with fresh acidity, well-integrated tannin, a good mouthfeel and good length. Average concentration, but lovely balance. A success in the context of the vintage. Drink now and over the next two to three years.

NB: Pairing the wine with a cigar ("The Leaf Maduro" by Oscar Valladares) transformed it into cranberry juice.

  • The wine was medium ruby in colour, and garnet at the edges. It offered red fruit, red cherry, spices, earth, some oak, some coffee and some tea on the nose and palate, with lively acidity, slightly grainy tannin and good length. The medium- to light-bodied wine was reasonably balanced and benefited from aeration. It drank best after an hour in the decanter. Drink now and over the next three to four years.

  • Nice fruit an leather notes on the palate. Very expressive after an hour or so of air. Reminds me of bottles 3x the price. The palate is a bit flat, but has nice cherry notes and good tannins. Better than a couple months ago and should improve for another year or two at least.

  • Red fruits (cherry, strawberry, watermelon), nice acidity. A bit thin. Slightly better after 1-2 hours of aeration.

  • A perfect foil to the pasta with sausage, peppers, onions (in a rich red sauce) - which brought out some beautiful cherry fruit in a silky smooth medium weight package. Now after dinner, on it's own, the fruit is a bit more subdued and it tastes a bit thin. Simple enough - we'll enjoy the remaining bottles with food.

  • Fresh nose, red fruited, floral. Palate shows cherry layers, medium body, light alcohol. Nice QPR from a dynamite producer.

  • Now 100% Sangiovese which was not the case with the previous owners. THey don't mind blends I am being told but they want to show Sangiovese in Montepulciano.

Spicy red fruit, with good refreshing acidity, 20-25 year old vines, the idea is that this gives the brightness of the fruit and is easy to drink. And yes, by and large that is the case. They aim for aromatics. A fresh expression when its not over extracted or aged.

  • Watery translucence. Light sweet strawberry. Soft and feminine. Enjoy on a light picnic now, not one to age. Offers a little marzipane leather as it breathes. As the woman meets the man.

  • I was initially surprised by the quite light colour and body of this wine but having got over that I started to appreciate its red cherry tinged fruit, gentle minerals, light herbs, fresh acidity and decent length with not a lot of backbone. Good.

  • Pale ruby. The nose shows medium+ intensity aromas of dark cherries, black tea, lavender and hints of cedar.

It is dry in the mouth with a medium+ acidity. It has medium+ fine-grained tannins and a medium+ alcohol. It has a medium+ body and pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is medium+.

It is a very good quality wine. It has a persistent finish and a perfect balance among tannins, acidity, alcohol and flavour concentration. But a better example of this style would show more complexity.

  • Nice to have a wine showing this sort of complexity at a sub-$20 price point. P&P, immediately generous nose with earthy, herbal aromas - I can sit and sniff this for a good while. On the palate, lively and well-balanced. I'd put this on the light end of medium in terms of heft - right where I like wines to be. 13% ABV is held in check with bright acidity and a healthy mix of red fruit, tobacco and herbs, and some mineral spine. No reason not to drink right now and over the next year or two. Serve at 15-16 C. and enjoy!

  • The wine was light to medium ruby in colour, leaning towards garnet. It offered red fruit, coffee, herbs, spices and earthy notes on the nose, and cherry, herbs, coffee, spices, some tea and earthy notes on the fruity palate, with medium to medium-plus acidity, slightly grainy medium to medium-plus tannin and very good length. Admittedly, the medium- to light-bodied wine seemed a little thin and did not seem built to go a long distance, but it was very seductive and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Perfect as your easy-drinking, middle of the week red. Drink now and over the next three to five years.

  • I've had this wine three times now in the past week, and I love it. Those looking for lip-smacking fruit that may or may not have jumped from the glass, will be disappointed (see anonymous person's drive-by 85 point score). It's €10 at the cellar, and worth every penny. The color is a brilliant garnet toward ruby, with subtle aromas of strawberry, cherry, soil, stones, and a twist of dried herbs. The medium(-) body is really well-lifted, more so if you consider the challenges of the vintage. A compact structure with a dusting of tannins and a medium finish. Tangy at times, with very fine energy. AFWE to be sure. 13,0% abv., drink thru 2018. recommended

    PnP, served non-blind.

  • 100% Sangiovese.
    Med/- ruby color.
'Avignonesi refers to the Nobles that came back from Avignon with the Pope, when he returned to Rome from France.'
Palate shows much more substance than the lighter color suggests. Red berry fruit, shows just a touch of (new) oak to the palate.
