Nose: Blackberry, leather, clove, blueberry and loamy earth. Palate: Seamless palate, dark berries, mineral, pencil and blue fruit notes. Refined leather, tobacco and sage. The detailed focus is impressive on the palate. Finish: Lengthy, vibrant red and blue fruit, loam and graphite.
I have not had a bottle of this in over 10-yrs, but managed to find it on a steakhouse winelist for a fair price. Performing outstandingly well today.

dark dark red, brick rim - effusive nose of blackberries, cassis, and mocha - somewhat more complexity than last year - full fat rich mouth up front, but less so the middle, as before - very nice acid-tannin-fruit balance - long 20-30 second finish, slight bitterness - very well developed California cab that is beginning to express more elegance than previously - most of the earlier tasting notes were focused on the wine's youthful exuberance, rather than its potential for development with age - I'll keep my last bottle another 3-5 years before I would decide on my final judgement

dark dark red, brick rim - effusive nose of blackberries, cassis, and mocha - full fat rich mouth up front, but definite hole in the middle - nice acid-tannin-fruit balance, slightly bitter - long 20 second finish - very well developed California cab that still expresses more power than elegance - should easily go another 5-10 years, but probably at its best now

Reinterpreted Paris Tasting 'Best Bottle Circle' Style (Emmen, Switzerland): Deep clear ruby in color. Nose shows tar, coffee and ripe berries. Powerful, balanced and elegant. Nice sweetness and still a young Napa beauty. Drink now over the next 15 years. A wine that performed very well next to all the legendary bottles

Tasted side-by-side with a 1999 Constant. This was a different beast altogether: slightly lighter in color, sweeter, and showing some baking spice and cherry on the nose. Beautifully balanced and simply delicious. Seems to be in a sweet spot right now, but can certainly be kept longer.

Wow! Get your big boy pants on for this one. Deep and dark purple color. Nose (after decanting) - surrounding a core of sweet baking spices, lucius dark berry fruit and a tinge of orange zest are chocolate and spearmint - spend some time nosing this wine as there is a beautiful harmony to these notes. Dark berry fruit and valrhona chocolate on the palate with the orange zest showing on the mid palate. Both big and balanced, just a beautiful wine! Oakville at its finest.

Sampled 8/15/12. The color is still deep, but this monster wine's fruit is starting to fade and the acidity is really coming on strong. This wine was much better balanced a few years ago.

This wine, obviously well-cellared, was presented as a gift to me by a very dear friend. I insisted that we enjoy the bottle together (the same night) with dinner. The wine was accordingly taken to a restaurant, where it was decanted and serially consumed over the ensuing 2-3 hours. While a formal note was not written, it can be said that this particular bottle was stellar. The robe was opaque red/garnet and the nose showed complex aromas of black fruits, chocolate, exotic spices, cigar box and leather. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium sweet tannins. The flavors mirrored the nose, with the addition of an iron/mineral element. The solid middle palate lead to a finish which went on and on. This gem (assuming well-cellared) should drink nicely for another decade or so. Drink now-12/22.

Napa Experience; October 29 2011 (Rutherford, Yountville, Napa): Purchased this at the winery so storage conditions assumed to have been pristine. This is a bit flashy..85% estate grown cabernet with most of the rest merlot and a bit of petit verdot. Very fruit forward, big mouthfeel with rounded smoothed tannins, complex and provocative. Classic cab leathery with spice, bit of coffee and deep red fruits. We had it decanted, threw off a fair amount of sediment. By the time we were finishing this bottle, it seemed to have fallen apart in the glass, simply became disjointed. This seems to be at or even past its peak, would not decant the next time and enjoy it for what it is

This wine seemed off...not corked, just off compared to the many. bottles I've had before. We all commented how "hot" the wine was especially for a 12 year old Napa Cab. It literally never seemed to open up and it was decanted and drunk over 2-3 hours. It seemed to have the muscle to handle the Peppercorn Crusted Strip I had for dinner. Had this along with a '97 Marcassin, '75 Latour, and '86 Caymus Cuvee at Seagars in Destin with wife and friends. The Latour was in a whole other world. It well out classed the competition and proved great bordeauxs can age well.

Drank this bottle along with a '91 Latour. Initially, I enjoyed the nice fruit from Hartwell but the taste of the Latour was smooth with the classic earthy and tobacco flavors. I was really impressed at how well the Latour held up to the Hartwell, and my buddy, who prefers Napa to Bordeaux, ended up saying he thought the Latour was better this evening than the Hartwell. Either way, both were great bottles and showed just how differently Napa bottles are compared to their Bordeaux counterparts.

Second bottle, first bottle was flawed. Opened and decanted for 90 minutes. Black fruit followed by moderate acidity, firm tannins and a dry finish. Initially the acidity overpowered the fruit but as time passed the wine became more balanced and rounded.

bought 3 bottles 2 years ago and opened up the first bottle that night with 2 good friends at dinner and the wine was outstanding. Opened up another bottle with the same friends for dinner last night and there was a significant change over the past 2 years. Don't get me wrong, wine is drinking well now-- Beautiful fruit with nice balance ,however the finish definitely stops shorter then it did a year ago. The wine probably reached it's peak 1-2 years ago; therefore we will open our last bottle within the next 6 months so we can enjoy it while it is still enjoyable. 2 years ago I would have rated the wine 95-96. 2 years later a 92. My suggestion is don't wait for it to drop to an average score.

Tasted a bottle on a recent Napa trip. Wine was extremely acidic. It lost some of the acidity after being open for 12 hours. Could taste some fruit - blackcurrent - and toasted marshmellows/almonds on the back end. Based on prior comments I assume the bottle was flawed as it wasn't drinkable when it was first opened

Dark purple-red color. The nose on this wine is fantastic; dark and red fruits, some sweet oak, and chocolate. It showed no signs of fading with considerable time in the glass. Everything seems to be well-balanced. The palate showed red fruit, medium acidity, and well-integrated tannins. The finish was medium-long. I believe this wine is just about peaking and should drink well for 5+ more years.

Tasted with the 2003 Staglin Family Vineyard. The Hartwell won fairly easily with our group. It had much better nose that had alot of berry smell including backberry and a little hint of chocolate. Amazing finish that is so silky smooth. I absolutely love this wine.
The Staglin had a very strong nose but a little too much blueberry and a hint of green pepper. The finish was much better than the nose and had the earthy, mocha chocolate flavor that seemed to last almost a minute. I don't think it was a very fair comparison considering the Hartwell had 4 years more of bottle age.

Had this bottle with wife and some friends at Maggiano's. Amazing nose. The bartender and waitress both had the same comment as to the finish, "like butter." The nose had a chocolately mocha and tobacco smell. I could put my nose in the glass and not be overwhelmed with the alcohol. The tannins were as smooth as silk with a finish that seemed to last for almost 45 seconds. One of the best bottles of wine I have ever tried. I sure hope the remaining 3 are every bit as good as this one. The bartender commented as well that this was one of the best bottles, nose and finish, he had ever tried. Drinking incredibly well now.

Taste testing that consisted of the 1999 Hartwell Estate (94 Rating) vs the 2005 Caymus Regular Cab (87 Rating). I had the bartender that opened the bottles perform a taste test but didn't want to know his results until after I'd tasted both. Well, it was unanimous with me, my wife, and the bartender. The Hartwell won hands down. Actually, the nose on the Caymus smell flawed although the cork looked fine and the taste was ok. I wouldn't have expected the Caymus to have won considering the youthfulness of the bottle compared to the Hartwell but a bad nose made the decision rather easy.
