2013 Pax Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard

  • Astounding Cali Syrah from top producer Pax, at a lovely stage. Undeniably Syrah, N Rhône influenced.

N: Unbelievably perfumed at first pop. Dark, brooding blackcurrant, plum reduction, with a intense violet overtone. Faint toasted oak. Peppered meat, rosemary stem.

P: Muscular, brilliant concentration, more blackcurrant, blackberry, dried raspberry. Lifted mouth feel despite full body, w/ bitter black olive tapenade, violets, earthy spice. Tans still med+, acid med.

F: V long, leather, spice, cream

  • This was my first North American Syrah. Nothing at all like the note below suggests (either they had a bad bottle, or a few more years has worked wonders). Medium-full bodied, deep & succulent dark fruit with a Cote-Rotie like lift / freshness. At 14.5% this is a high alcohol wine for me, but I didn't notice it while drinking (the next morning is a different matter). It doesn't have - or I didn't pick up - any of the blood & Iron of the Northern Rhone. Impressive wine regardless, not cheap nor overpriced at £40 - re buy...maybe ? But like it I did

  • Sorry just really not liking this. In fact I bought 6 bottles and then returned 5 of them. Similar experience with the 2012. I am leaving open the possibility that this has been stored poorly as this bottle was way too acid with fading fruit and just really out of balance. Have had Pax before and it wasn't like this.
