  • Impressively young at 15 years! Complex nose, with intense red fruit and gentle cask notes. Medium to full bodied, this remarkably well structured and expressive bottle boasts fine fruit aromas, chocolate, toast, plum and caramel notes, with a long mentholic finish. Add this wine to a blind tasting of Bordeaux clarets and you may mislead your guests. I expect this wine to further improve and would not touch it for another 5 years. Bravo!

  • Was expecting (again) to be less than thrilled with this '03. Have been disappointed by many '03s from Spain, but not so with this one. Did not seem old or pruny at all. Color not faded, tannins by no means gone. This wine is quite stout and dry. I was wishing I had a steak with it instead of pork. Drank like a very nice old world Cab. Finishes very dry. Pretty impressive stuff, and still young, I think. I would hold another 2-3 years if I had another one.

  • Drank at Terra, Porto. We told the maitre'd that we had Barca-Velha last night and wanted something "similar". He smiled and said " well, Barca-Velha in a class by itself.". After explaining various reasons why, he suggested we try this wine so we sallied forth! Light chocolate reddish color, only slightly but that could be influenced by my Barca-Velha experience. Fair amount of dirt, warmness and alcohol (14% - darn, I am sensitive) on the nose. Very light to virtually no tanins, albeit starting to show more as the wine opens. Chocolate, black fruits with a long fairly smooth finish. Despite being '03, this wine could lay down another decade easily. Tanin quite a bit pronounced at the end...took nearly 2 hours to be ready.

  • A foot-trodden field blend from the old vineyards at Quinta do Bom Retiro. There is spicy, minerally black fruit on the nose. Very rich on the attack. Very concentrated, deep stuff. Eye-watering price, though. Very Good Indeed +.
