This was an intriguing wine. Very slow to open, not giving much on the nose or palate, quite austere for nearly two hours. Then it slowly began to show bright red fruit and mineral notes on the nose and palate began to put on weight. Tannins were fine but notable at first and began to integrate into the almost viscous body; long, long finish. This wines need another five years or more. Drank over two days and the score reflects the second day improvement. May deserve even higher score in the future.

Dinner with Jacques Lardière at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): I've loved how the 2000s have been drinking for the past few years, and this was another bottle that proves the point. The perfumed aromatics here are incredible, with both lovely florals and red fruit. It's simultaneously delicate and powerful at the same time. The palate is fully resolved, with beautiful acids framing sweet red fruit and a dense core of rusty earth. M. Lardière was very proud of this vintage, and rightly so. To my palate, at peak.

Splendid colour; sprightly nose, crunchy red fruits, shoes it’s class; easy going, yet underscored by refreshing acidity, bright fruit; this retains vigour & finishes energetically. Drink now & next 5+ years though will age longer.

Lived up to high expectations. Good perfume on the nose, with a touch of red fruit. On the palate red fruit / cranberry balanced with strong (but not overbearing acidity)and fine tannins on the finish. Delicious on its own, paired with a steak where the salt really brought the fruit out further and the acidity effectively disappeared.
In a good place now, but still quite fresh / fruit hanging on so probably can hold for another 3-5 yrs easily before fruit may fade a bit.

Similar impressions to the last time out - this was solid and very enjoyable without quite being anything special. It had a nice nose, with a quiet complexity showing it subtle notes of flowers, anise, and angelica root herbs playing alongside blueberries and higher-toned red fruit notes. With time, more earthy, herby, spicy accents started coming to the fore. The palate was soft and welcoming, almost completely resolved, with delicious floral notes dancing around a core of redder cherry and strawberry fruit. The tannins were really gentle, but the acidity still kept the wine up nicely. At the end, the fruit was sprinkled with flecks of bittersweet chocolate, some cloves and a touch of minty bramble in a mid-lengthed finish.

After two flawed bottles of this previously, finally a cracker. Bright cherry red; dense. Silky with a filigree quality. Opens out to show quite an expansive palate held within an elegant and precise frame. Nicely mineral and beautifully defined. Very good indeed. ****1/2

Mature black and red cherry aromas with hints of chocolate, mushroom and mild Indian curry. Equally advanced flavors, similar profile, with moderate structure and concentration for its level. Good now, I doubt there is upside from here.

2000 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck): One of the weaker wines on the night. It was decently good in its own right, but paled in the midst of some illustrious company. It was actually quite shy when first poured, only opening up slowly to show a pleasant nose with earth and spice and cherry fruit tones, and then a little funky meatiness that got more pronounced with time. Quite nice, and with time in the glass, it got even better, with some lovely floral aromas taking their place amongst the earthier tones. Like the Musigny that preceded it, the palate was rather tighter wound and less complex than the nose. This was a strong, muscular wine though, starting out with a nice depth wed to energetic freshness, with a deliciously dark-fruited attack of juicy cherries wrapped in gentle tannins. Unfortunately, it flagged a little past the midpalate and into the finish. It was very clean and quite vibrant, with a nice tingly presence on the top of the tongue. but it died quite quickly on the back palate with a short burst of juicy acidity and not much in the way of length. Overall, a nice wine to drink, even if a bit simple for a Grand Cru. It may improve a little over the next few years, but I do not think there is all that much room to grow on this one.

Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Marea - New York NY): Fresh and forward black and red cherry aromas and flavors with subtle spice. Fun and forward, still quite fresh, very nicely balanced. Lacking a little bit of concentration I often find and like in Bonnes Mares.

Xmas day dinner. No previous experience of wine at this level so nr. Massive wall of tannin that obscures everything else, very little fruit. Is it too young? Don't know what to think of it

At W's over impromptu drinks. This was a real huge contrast to the elegant JJ Confuron RSV. Dark red in colour, bouquet was full of grilled meat and animal. Truffle, undergrowth and sour cherries on the palate, but a very muscular, brooding wine. Tannins were nicely resolved but this could do with more time in the cellar. Very impressive effort.

Eighth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Bottle was open some time after dinner, but very little was consumed. Cork was reinserted, and my note is based on tasting it the next afternoon. Ripe and forward red fruit aromas, modest spice, emerging earthy hints. Elegant structure, everything forward and integrated now, this is in its peak drinking window today but should hold well for close to another decade..

A touch of brown to the colour, but the wine is fresh with some maturity and not old; light cherry/raspberry fruit; a clean, elegant wine, but it lacks richness and depth; in fact, for a grand cru it is rather thin and therefore a bit disappointing. We have had better village wines.

Comes across very restrained, tannic and perhaps a little closed poured alongside the '90 Drouhin Bonnes Mares. There's tightly coiled dark fruit and a powerful minerality underneath, but it's not giving up much right now and there's a wall of tannin that screams for more time.

Bryan's Chambolle & Morey GC Dinner (The Ledbury, London): A little more open on the nose. Lighter and fresher on the palate initially. Quite fragrant. Then a woody, green, herbaceous edge appears on the finish. I think this is woody in a 1/10 corked way rather than anything else. Would have been a good ***.

Light to medium colour; medium weight on the palate. This has a very refined bouquet and flavour of strawberries and raspberries. It is very long, but lacks a little richness which is perhaps a feature of the vintage.

A compelling nose of black truffles and slight barnyard (good) on opening. It shows more Chambolle Musigny than St. Denis, ie more rustic. After 15-30 minutes some of its seam lines begin to show - tannins start to emerge - the skins and stems start to drown out the fruit. Acidity remains well balanced. My guess is that this wine will not evolve to the extraordinary. A good middle-of-the-week Grand Cru enjoyable wine of pleasant complexity. Very long finish.
