  • Slow ox for 1 hour. Elegant and perfume nose but the taste was not ready until 1 hour in the glass, it showed some strength with some complexity (but the nose becomes shy). Fully open both in perfume and palate about 1.5 hours in the glass. The wine becomes more full-body with loads of fruit, branches and ash, with long finishing with mint. Very nice to drink.

  • Drink beautifully. Pure, precise cherry fruit, richness yet lightness to body. No rush to consume. Cellared since original release.

  • Nose of nice funk and earth but a bitter streak. Similar on palate a bit of spice and earth. Nice savory on palate but of meat and earth. Lots of spice but bitter as well. Tart dry finish. Good but not great Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.

  • Brought to an offline, drank along side the '00 Ponsot CdlR. This was more braughny. A masculine burg, very nice dark red berries, a bit of astringency and fine drying tannins. Still drinking young, too bad it was my last bottle. Bought at auction, it was from the Rusty Staub Collection.

  • P & P, wet cork, some seepage under capsule. Medium colour, remarkable nose, sweet and fruity, but with added candy floss and lavender in the perfume, slightly synthetic but actually rather pleasant. I wondered if it had been vinified in Grasse. Less sweet on the palate, mellow acidity, some pleasant tannins, significant deposit in last 2 glasses. Very good now.

  • Such a fresh sweet fruit aroma on decanting. Sweet mature silky fruit nose, not over ripe. Very fresh, no dust, forest floor or mushrooms. Clean, pure on the palate with a gentle grip of soft tannin. Great acidity. Very understated but very very good. The bottle looked terrible but it must have been stored in a stable low temperature with good humidity. It tasted like it was only a couple of years old, not 18.

  • I carried this back from MSD Caveau 3-4 years ago. Medium color, red fruits, sweet palate, but not too ripe. Ample acidity to balance. Some 97's are pretty good.

  • nose started very nice, with mature fruit, and a touch of a roasty character. Initially a bit too much astringency, but after an hour it integrated well. A mineral spine continued to show through out, nice but not what I hope to find in a Grand Cru

  • In the interest of registering that there are poor bottles of this around, I post a note written after a disappointing Christmas performance a few years ago. The bottles came from a very reliable source.

    "Griotte-Chambertin 1997 – AOC Grand Cru – Domaine Ponsot – Alc. 13.5%

    C: Quite light ruby red.
N: Very muted upon opening but with some faint red and dark fruit emerging with air.
P: The overwhelming impression here was of thinness of texture, darkness and dryness and the little fruit that there was resembled sour black currant. The second bottle was slightly fuller but still a long way off Gevrey-Chambertin grand cru standard but perhaps acceptable as basic Bourgogne; first bottle 12/20; second 13/20."

  • Light and frail with surprisingly abrupt tannin. But pleasant to drink and some nice perfume.

Excepcional.

  • Superb stuff. It was extremely restrained (closed?) on the nose, revealing stone and minerals with occasional glimpses of brilliant red fruit. This wine gives the impression of light-to-medium body, yet seems to cover the palate completely, with incredible weightlessness and length. Again, the fruit flavors seemed closed for much of the evening (very minerally in the finish), but even so this was totally seductive juice.
