2016 Château La Clotte

  • Tasted alongside eight other St Emilions of distinction from the 2016 vintage, this wine presented itself as the most elegant with florals and beautiful soft fruit on the redder side of the spectrum - the dark concentrated red ruby fruit I associate with Right Bank Merlot. Evident minerality. Fresh. Decanted an hour, this seemed to become more serious in the glass but in this company remained relatively easy going at 13% but also just a little more discrete on the back end than most. Not quite fully ready. This vintage 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc as I understand it. Surely a very worthy vintage in this Chateau's progression towards being something quite lovely. Hold 5 years.

  • A bit tight on opening. This was drinking really well after an hour or two. Beautiful balanced, quite plush and delicious and well balanced now. One hour Decant recommended.

  • Stunning wine. Popped and poured and so ready, glossy but superbly balanced. Only 13 degrees on the label (so rare in 21st century St Emilion) cool and perfectly weighted. Glorious, sophisticated texture, really serious black fruit and pristine ripe tannins. The balance really is formidable and it’s immediate appeal, coolness and finish are so promising. You could be drinking Ausone. A regal wine, an absolute beauty. Wow!

  • Enjoyable, fairly typical warm vintage bordeaux, nothing of note to report. Ripe, accessible tannins, no decant needed.

  • Stunning wine of depth and complexity, with nose of plums, earth, blue and red berries, coffee and chocolate. The scents are absolutely wonderful! Juicy, rich and long with marvelous intensity and supple finish. Exquisite.

  • Deep red cherry and plums pop once the wine hits the glass. The wine is silky, polished, sweet and fresh. There is more purity of fruit than usual, which really lets the sweetness in the red fruits stand out. Medium-bodied, with a soft, inviting character, the freshness and sweet red berries in the finish really pop this year.

  • Succulent fruits, stone, fresh red plum and licorice start the show. Medium/full bodied with ample fruits, spice, herbs and earth, the tannins are smooth and the fruit offers character and charm. The wine was made from a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place October 12 to October 17. I had thought the 2015 was going to remain their best wine ever, but with the 2016, this is a new level of quality here.
