good not great. Smooth delivery, minimal tannins, light earthy tone, but did not have the complexity of an aged cab. I have the 2017 mangum and like it better.

Medium garnet in colour. Muted nose, although improved as it opened up. More earth notes than fruit notes. Reminiscent of left bank Bordeaux. Similar to the Chateau Montelena in style. Short finish. I’m not into fruit bombs but would have preferred more layers of fruit.

1 hour decant. Still an inky ruby color. Initially shy, the nose opened up to notes of earth, tobacco and leather with an underlying base of black currant. Hints of vanilla, dark chocolate and baby powder. Slightly velvety mouthfeel with light acidity. Rich, ripe cherry and dry blackberry fruits on the palate, with the fruit gradually moving to more of a pleasant sour-cherry nature over an hour. Short, slightly grippy finish. A well-made wine, with a food-friendly bordeaux character, and well worth the price, but no real wow factor, and the wine didn't improve with further time. Drink now.

Dejar respirar 1 hora y disfrutar. Recomendado.

Beautiful condition settled, just opening up to deep secondary and early tertiary notes. Quite lovely, rich and relaxing wine. 2014 the year of fruit is turning a ell in the bottle. Easily a few years on its life. Deep chocolate and light raspberry notes draw you in with hints of tobacco and early leather smells. The flavors and smells are rich and enticing. Lovely wine.

Opened and poured. Initially thin, dry, acidic-sour, lacking complexity, fruit or tannin. 2nd day wine opened with soft, resolved tannins and blue-black fruitiness, green peppercorn. Likely best to consume remaining bottles within the year.

I previously reviewed on 04/02/2021. Decanted and consumed with charcuterie. Lavender-purple in color. nose is lavender, cocoa powder, tobacco-y. Still tight tannins, firm and a bit astringent, opening gradually over a few hours. Dry, even firm, but balanced; didn’t come across as “big” as previous tasting. Cherry, tobacco to cigar, dusty leather, black pepper. Predict this will age well for up to a decade. Very good wine at this price.

Tight tannins fully opened after 30 or 40 minutes. Dry, balanced, bigger cab; flavors of red fruits, pomegranate, cigar. Has aged well and likely has several more years to go. Great wine at this price! (Paired with seared pork chops and roasted mushrooms.)

Open to a strong floral aroma with hints or oak. Deep dark garnet in presentation. Then it fools you a little as ripe cherry, raspberry and dark chocolate flavors race to your tastebuds. This is hearty, full body and well balanced and does not interfere with the flavorful enjoyment. Paired with a charcuterie plate that seemed to exacerbate the everlasting finish. And it only got better as the evening progressed.

This is a very different Cali cab. Hard to describe. Cellophane, gravel, cigar box, almost an antiquity smell/taste. The fruit was almost secondary yet there and wonderful. A Bordeaux style for sure really nice. Went well with a beef and broccoli dish based on oyster sauce.

This wine was insipid compared to the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Had a good mouth feel, but no great substance to back it up. Twice as cheap as the Reserve, and i get it. I don’t recommend this wine, but do recommend the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.

Solid napa cab without being exciting in anyway. On the nose a nice bouquet of pencil shavings, a hint of earth of red fruits. Sinewy chewy mouthfeel, with Cassis, deeper red fruits in the entry, shortish finish dominated with oak tannins was a bit of a disappointment. Overall, it felt like there was decent material here but a general feel of safety first wine making is a bit of a let down.

Manufactured to drink younger. Initially completely lacking freshness with only barnyard, truffle, and wet earth coming through. After an hours time a nice amount of ripe black fruit, cassis, and oak emerge with the prior elements falling to the background. Didn’t blow me away but actually better than I expected.

Wow, what a difference a few months make. This was immediately accessible and not at all like the experience I've had with the 2014 estate cab over the last few tastings. Will open a bottle at home soon to compare notes to my experience at the tasting. Was able to re-visit over the course of the visit and continued to impress, approaching the reserve in terms of score.

I still consider this wine to be overrated and overpriced at full retail. the reserve is a cut above and in the low to mid 90’s rating but for the price point and I paid for this on LB it was worth it for breaking out during the holidays with larger groups. Just an average juice. Stick with the reserve and buy it right.

So, I remember being down on the 2013 Groth. I opened it hoping for some relief from the tiresome parade of California Cabernet fruit bombs. I was looking for some nuance, some subtlety, some evidence of thought behind the creation. I was disappointed and bitter, and my review said so. With this 2014, for whatever reason, this house has redeemed itself in my mind. This wine is soft. It allows your senses to ruminate, without at any point overwhelming them with the palate-numbing fruity poison of an over-produced, Caymus-like formulaic potion. Still quite tannic, of course. 4 hours after decanting, this one caresses my tongue with a backward mouth that is full-feeling, feeling, but not oppressive. It's actually enjoyable! For a California Cabernet, how unique is that?!

Still needs more time. I keep saying that, so maybe it just won't ever come around? I guess it is just 4 years old, so I will reserve my judgment. Right now, just forget about these for another year and two and check in. I'd be interested in anyone else out there if they want to sacrifice a bottle for research to see what they think. It'll be good, I just don't know when. Have 5 bottles so I will try next one in mid 2019.

Deep inky purple color. Slightly mint/anise dominate nose with underlying aromas of lavender, blackberry & bramble. Probably needs a few more years, let it sit in the glass for about 20 minutes before it mellowed out enough to drink. Medium body with some berry fruit, a slight smokiness and a not too aggressive oaky/tanin finish. With a pepper crusted pork chop with honey-lavender glaze.

Bright dark garnet color with purple hues, medium full bodied, black berry and black cherry fruits with hints of vanilla black currant, licorice and touch of mint and oak on a smooth tannin laced finish.
Napa Weekend; 4/20/2018-4/23/2018 (Napa): Needs more time. Definitely paled in comparison to the 2014 Reserve that was poured after. I'm beginning to think the Groths (both labels) just need more time. You can decant for a few hours now, but the tannins were overwhelming without much decant while tasting at the winery. I think 5-10 years (2019-2024) will be the sweet spot for the 2014 when all is said and done. I'm convinced Groths can last 15 years if stored properly. I've bought a number of bottles directly from the winery that are 15+ that still have good life in them.

Normally impressed by Groth but this was lacking fruit. Perhaps just too young and still tight. In the wine’s defense, it was PNP at a Christmas Party. Just some oak and tannins.
