This is one of the top merlots produced by Duckhorn and it reflects it heritage. Smooth long lasting finish that paired very well with our prime rib. The dark fruit flavors wee matched with the alcohol and acidity combined with mild tannins while still providing a full (not bold) bodied wine. Drink this wine by 2029, but now is not a bad idea,

Aromas of macerated cherry, blackberry, maybe some iodine. Soft (maybe too soft) on the palate, showing chocolate covered cherry and not enough acidity. Jammy and a little hot on the finish. Drinkable but expected more for the price.

It is a nice wine but i fail to see greatness. After 2 hrs of air i was thinking it drank hinting at a 20€ Beaujolais Cru. A a little hot too. Nothing wrong with this - there is just so much competition in this pricerange.

The quality is obvious, but it’s not really my style. Lots of blackberry, black plum, cranberry sauce, and raspberry fruit, some chocolate shavings, burnt earth, incense, caramel, and scorched earth. There’s a sense of place, but the fruit and oak are the dominating characteristics. Even after a few days open, they were still the dominant characteristics. For me, I would have wished a bit more complexity.

An excellent Merlot dominant wine that needs more time.
The first thing that went through my mind was the quality of the fruits this wine was derived from. This is a serious Merlot with all the complexity of a very good Merlot, albeit with an American accent. Famous as it put Duckhorn on the map a few decades back, it is a powerful Merlot and a sophisticated one. Black berries and quite dark fruit, it was very intense but by no means a fruit bomb as it had spice, floral notes and a hint of vanilla began to emerge. Body is medium to full and is nice shaped by linear and fresh acidity, hinting a long life ahead. Quite a reach and creamy body that requires food, this is not a food that should be enjoyed on its own. Went very with short ribs.
Drink in 4 years from now and to 2030+.

Decanted 1+ hr. Dark purple opaque, long legs, on the 👃 licorice, ripe blueberries, morning mist wet forest floor, light leather, light peppercorn , light graphite, nectarines. Dry, high acidic, full body, medium tannins, throat burning ripe blueberries and vanilla. Fragrance more complex than taste in this bottle.

Well made, refined, worthy of the pedigree . Red in the glass with a slight bricky tinge on the edges. Complex, red fruit with some minerality and wood and leather. Definitely not fruit forward, but with air the fruits emerge and provide a very pleasant roundness. Fine tannins, sustained finish.

Much better than the previous bottle, this one did not display that heat and harshness. Concentrated black cherry fruit is winsome even if it is straightforward. A bit of wood tannin keeps the flavor in bounds. Presumably at peak now. Really quite enjoyable for what it is.

Top-notch NW Merlot from Duckhorn. Deep ruby red and translucent in glass. Nose is expressive, powerful, concentrated, lots of black cherries, plums, cinnamon touch, chocolate and hints of oak and herbs. Full-bodied, forceful palate, silky tannins, mix of red and black fresh and meaty fruit such as blueberries and plums, vivid acidity, integrated oak, exuberant spicy finish lingering for 45 sec. Likely to age superbly. Merlot Day 2021.

At Carna at Baha Mar Bahamas. On a list that was well marked up, I found this to be a decent price and went for it. Paired beautifully with Australian wagyu filet mignon and a bone in NY strip along with a number of sides. Definitely more "cab-like" than your typical merlot.
Perfect Merlot. Med-high body. Smooth, round body. Med-texture. Perfectly balanced tannins. Red fruit. Musky nose. Some deep floral scents. Roses. Absolutely worth every penny. This is delightful on the palate. Balanced taste from front to back. Just makes me happy to drink it.

From memory, this has calmed down some. Still, it’s exuberant and über fruity as it should be. High in extract, cherry fruit and alcohol. Decent acidity. But even for what it is, it’s kinda boring. Too bad there’s no tannin or earth to reward the taster. It needs to be consumed with barbecue sauce. Drink ASAP, if at all.

Score is for the wine at this point in time. Should be better at age 10. Medium plus body. Somewhat tight on the nose and pallet but continued to open with time.

Christmas Eve dinner of prime rib. Wonderful nose of red berries and chocolate. Smooth, with red fruits on the palate. Tannins integrated. Long finish. Paired wonderfully with meal. From a magnum, so still a little young. Have another magnum that I will save. Good for many more years.

First time trying this vintage and we really enjoyed it. 2 hours of decant. Major fruit with hints of vanilla, caramel, and a touch of butterscotch. Med On the T&A. I would say 3-4 more years would do wonders but it was still damn good now. Silky with length on the back.

More chocolate on the palate. The feel and weight of the wine is exceptionally balanced and while it shows a richness in all of its characteristics there is never a sense of being overdone, overripe or having wasted any energy. Tannins and oak are satisfyingly placed while the acid keeps a lively pace.

The exquisite nose offers aromas of lilac, rose petal, crushed Sweetarts, dehydrated strawberry, boysenberry, loam, pink peppercorn and graphite. It has a plush full body with sweet, fine grained Earl Grey tannin that blankets the palate and fine, precise acid that establishes needed tension. The structure is elegant and refined. The flavors are deeply layered and more confrontational than the nose, offering sweet plum, strawberry, tar, bitter cocoa, loam, black pepper and cassis. This is an expertly crafted with with great potential to elevate itself over the next 10-20 years.

On the nose, dark cherries, lots of dark and red fruits, aromas of dark Earth and leather and hints of mocha. On the palate, Balanced and juicy from the tip of the tongue to the back, medium - full body, more on the full side. Totally drinkable ! Was perfect with spaghetti and meatballs and garlic bread. Great with bread and chocolate, would be perfect without anything at all, . Would be equally good as just a sipping wine, with charcuterie, another pasta dish, or almost any other meat dish.
6/19/19 - Enjoyed the rest of the bottle with chicken tacos. Very, very good with this as well, and a nice spoonful of chocolate sauce for dessert.

I have enjoyed previous Three Palms vintages even before all the recent hype. The 2016 is quite backward and needs cellaring for a couple of years so it can develop the richness and balance of previous incarnations

From glass. Astringency on nose, and some sweetness too - a kind of sweet menthol. Still, distant. Not so expressive on the palate. Dark and blank. Tar, some evidence of mild oak treatment and some inoffensive cocoanut sweetness, a bitter finish of dark espresso. Not rough, but not luscious or velvety either. Of some undeniable quality, but not certain that this would evolve into my cup of tea with either age or air. At least not the cup of tea that I would be hoping for at this price.

Brief tasting during a walk around of California Wineries, Montreal.
I have heard a lot of hype about this Merlot and was hence expected to be highly disappointed. Aromas of bright red fruit along with chocolate on the nose, on the palate I found ripe plums, strawberries and cacao along with a little pepper and spice, the tannins are nicely structured yet I feel this is quite young and should be kept anothr couple of years to really develop, this is a powerful yet elegant wine. Time will help....fantastic finish which will only improve in the coming years. Wow, colour me impressed!
