  • Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim. This 7 year old is showing a great nose now.

    Dry on the palate with medium plus acidity.

    Showing red and black fruits with wood, earth, herbs, spices, wild flowers, chocolates, leather, tobacco leaf, dark coffee and black pepper.

    This is a delicious, yet very young, Sangiovese from Chianti. Nicely balanced, powerful and tangy.

    This 2016 vintage holds great promise for aging gracefully over the next two decades. However, at present, it has yet to fully reach its full potential. Would be nice to revisit it in 5 years.

    Would have been nice to have it decanted for a few hours, but it wasn't my call. I had it blind, so it is what it is.

    I paired it with a Charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

    100% Sangiovese grapes.

    14% alcohol by volume.

  • 17/16/09. Whereas the 17 wasn't offering much pleasure, the 16 was a hedonistic delight. Of course not close to ready but so much joyful, plump fruit with refined edges already apparent. Primary but harmonious and lots of fun. Still going strong on night two. Better in a decade+

  • Sangiovese study (Chicago, IL): Killer nose, and readily my favourite of the flight. Sweet, perfumed red fruit, with a slight herbal element as well, with an intensity that the 2017 just doesn't match at all. A bit cooler in stature than the ripe and flashy 2009, this is obviously very young, and in that stern tannic structure on the palate, this mirrors the 2017 quite a bit. But there's an added level of complexity and aromaticity to this wine that works brilliantly here. One for the ages, so they say.

  • Clear, ruby and medium intensity in the glass. Had a clean red fruit nose (at first pour a little prune as well) with some balsamic, a touch of clove and vanilla, stone dust and herbal notes. The mouth was well structured with grainy tannins throughout the palate, and a medium plus acidity. The length was significant. Very delicious wine.

  • No rating as it seems too early to assess how this wine will unfold. However, it seems extremely promising.
    This was my first experience with Pergole Torte and it has not much in common with the other bottlings from this beloved house.
    This wine is quite deep in color. The nose is rather muted and far from the floral notes I usually get in other wines from Montevertine. The palate is brooding, structured and with a modern sweetness to the fruit that is always immediately picked up by a fine though solid streak of acidity. It never feels heavy and is rather long.
    Drank over 3 days, this wine didn't budge one bit, never felt altered and ever so slightly opened on day 2.
    This is a haunting, mysterious wine that I can't wait to taste in 5, 10 and 15 years. I'm buying more.

  • off the chart...alcohol is not prominent... this is still open but has a core of fruit that is so concentrated that it will afford the wine the time needed to become a real stunner I feel

  • 100% Sangiovese from a vineyard planted in 1968. Fermented and macerated with the skins for 25 days. Aged for 12 months in French oak barriques, and for another 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks. 14% alcohol. Tasted blind.

    Brooding, very dark and only slightly translucent blackish-red color with a subtly maroon hue towards the rim. Brooding, somewhat sweet-toned and slightly glossy nose with aromas of sunny dark plums, wizened boysenberries and fresh black cherries, some toasty oak spice, a little bit of cassis, light raisiny tones, a sweet hint of pruney fruit and a perfumed touch of dried flowers. This feels like a modern, somewhat oak-driven Bordeaux, but with a more southern, Italian twist to it. The wine is dry, medium-to-moderately full-bodied and rather concentrated on the palate with intense flavors of ripe sour cherries and lingonberries, savory spices, some sweet dark fruits, a little bit of sweet, toasty oak spice, light leathery tones, a hint of extracted woody bitterness and a sunny touch of raisiny fruit. The wine is suggestive of sweetness, but the rather high acidity and quite assertive and moderately grippy tannins keep the overall feel rather savory and tightly-knit. The finish is moderately grippy and slightly warm with long, intense flavors of sweet dark fruits, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of tobacco, light toasty oak tones, a hint of wizened forest fruits and a touch of leather.

    After two un-oaked varietal Sangioveses from Chianti, this wine felt relatively modern and glossy with its rather pronounced - yet judicious and not overdone - oak influence. However, this wine also felt very impressive with its remarkable intensity, sense of concentration and muscular structure. The overall feel was surprisingly rich and sunny with its high alcohol and slightly pruney edge to the brooding, dark-toned fruit - I would've expected more brightness and freshness from a 2016 Sangiovese. I guessed Toscana IGT, but I expected something with at least a little bit of Cab in the mix, from the understated nuances of Cassis - surprised to learn this was actually Le Pergole Torte, which is a varietal Sangiovese wine. Nevertheless, an impressive powerhouse of a Sangiovese. Despite its somewhat solar nature, I can imagine this will continue to improve wonderfully in a cellar for a great number of years - it is obvious this wine is built for the long haul. I heartily recommend letting the wine age long enough for the oakier tones to integrate better with the concentrated fruit. Great stuff, but nevertheless feels rather expensive for the quality at 119€.

  • Wow. 5 year check in and this is just as many would have known, infanticide (but from a purpose bought bottle just for this reason). I gave it a violent decant (yes shaking in the bottle for those that are in the trade who do the same thing and taught me how) given some notes that this thing is asleep below and glad I did. The first thing you notice is the dichotomies. Rich but not heavy, lots going on but great precision, structured but not overtly tannic. This is a very interesting wine, great levels of fruit but it never feels flabby. In fact, all thought the long finish, in your mind, you are thinking about the precision and structure of the wine and what else is no showing at this point in time. This thing should not be touched for years….

  • Quite disappointing given the high expectations. Properly decanted, muted albeit lush fragrance on nose with acidic and tannic rush on palate. Balance off. This needs to rest for many years.

  • blind tasted with Sergio Zenato amarone 2013 & Carpineto CC Riserva 2015.

    Didn't get the hype with this wine. Maybe it is in fact to young at this point but for $189 CAD it should be better then the $29 CAD Chianti.....which it wasn't. Ended up returning my case of 2016 pergola torte.

  • Had at Trattoria la Strega and didn't take notes so this one goes right out of my memory.

    Popped and poured and it starts out a bit muted but after some fifteen minutes in the glass it starts to get going. Great depth and very pure aromatics with dark cherry, rose petals, aromatic herbs, some dusty gravel road and a whiff of oak spice.

    Smashing intensity to the fruit, silky texture and firm structure Surprisingly generous compared to their "lesser" wines but that is not a problem since it has structure to balance that out. Talking about a fist of steel in a velvet glove... The finish lingers for minutes with layers upon layers with ripe forest berries, herbs, turned soil, classy oak and lifted florals.

    I get what some tasters before me pointed out - that this is more powerful and more fruit-driven wine compared to what this producer is famous for. But I think they make this work since the fruit is fresh and vibrant, the oak very integrated and there's enough structure to balance that generous fruit. This was nothing short but amazing and will most certainly only get better with time.

  • Dark fruit and cedar. Quite ripe, and while one gets the sense this is overexteacted, the palate does favorably show an appealing lightness, with soft, fine tannins. Finishes hot. What baffles me most is that the straight Montevertine is beautiful in 2016, with beguiling aromatics and a great vibrancy, nothing like this showing.

  • I totally disagree with EnglishmansClaret’s categorization of the wine. I am very much an old world wine drinker and by no means into high octane Tuscan wines. Pergole Torte is one of the handful of Tuscan wines I actually buy. But this was really awesome. Huge wine for sure, but no way was it hot or “sweet”. It certainly had ferocious tannins, and there’s certainly a lot of fruit, but there is an elegance underneath, and definetely a good amount of acid. I think this will be incredible in about 20 years.

  • Yikes - really overblown stuff; blackberry, licorice, cocoa. Hot and aggressive. Similar palate. Tiring to drink.
