I have drunk recient vintages and this older vintage shows that this wine has character. Good body and acidity at 24.- Euros in restaurant. Wonderful QPR.

Dark garnet red, inky thick. Honey, lavender and dark plum. Subtle. Velvet mouth feel, creamy and rich. Great backbone with wonderfully balanced tannins. Dark fruit and earth in the comforting finish. Exotic wine blend, worth exploring.

Didn't blow me away; good value, nice balance, texture; held up well with some delicious food from the Tribeca Grill in New York. However, was outshown by some Super Tuscans, Bordeaux, and other beauties against which I contrasted this.

Flawless, with just some upper limitations. It smells fine, with a fresh black fruit, a dark floral matter and a little spicy nose which you'll match with the subtle creamy, light and and a little salty body for a really good and elegant impression. You will find here no breadth, no power, just a really drinkable, easy and cosy wine.

I have to admit that I love wines that startle me. When opened, the wine seemed like a bad old-fashioned chianti: brown, watery and acidic. What a diffference 3 hours makes! I'm looking at a deep purple colored wine with a hint of brick color on the edges. The nose still seems a little closed with just a hint of pomegranate. Body is medium but very velvety. There's a bit of nectarine along with cocoa and espresso. There's just the very slightest olive flavor too. Drinking this wine with hard aged cheeses and oil cured black olives is simply heaven.

Dark and chocolatey. Rather brooding. Great fruit. The wine ended up breathing for about 8 hours before we drank it, and we loved it. Deep and smooth and integrated.

Really neat wine. Very slightest jasmine on the nose along with cherry. Palate is medium bodied (after an hour of breathing) with velvety tannins, strong fruit and minerality. Fruit is plum, blackberry, and stone fruit. Velvety tannins and the fruit suggest apricots or nectarines. Finish shows mocha, pepper spice and complexity. This wine was a favorite at dinner.

Writing from memory here...bright cherry with intense fruit in a light-to-medium bodied wine. Not what I expected but a pleasant surprise. Somebody else compared this to a Cali pinot noir and I really agree, except that this wine has real character--maybe just because it's different...but I have more bottles to go to figure this out! I really like this wine.

Unique and fascinating wine. Distinctively bright, with citrus-peel and apricot notes to go along with Rainier cherry and currant, peppery on the finish. This is a red wine that will do well with lighter fare, including white-fleshed fish. Really exhibits a Mediterranean character.

Ruby medio, limpido. Aromas essencialmente frutados e adocicados.

13.5% alc...translucent medium ruby... The nose has a healthy dose of earthiness to begin, interesting cherry/berry combination... Generous acidity, almost seems forced, good texture, but the fruit is hollow - no complexity. Generic red at best. Very over priced.

Dark ruby. Young, fresh, middle body. Very lithe on palate--goes straight to the back. Red fruits, plus some minerality and spiciness. From the sweetness of the fruits comes a wonderful mocha and coco tone from the ripe tannin on the long finish. Tannins do not enter into the tasting unless you roll the wine around in the mouth. Not sure if the name (anima negra = black soul) is well chosen: could not find melcnaholia in the glass.

Consumed with my wife and father, over dinner (lamb skewers with onions, bell peppers, and lots and lots of black pepper, to play up the finish of the wine). I was surprised at how much fruit was present due to the syrah -- almost tasted cooked, compared to my recollection from the initial tasting. Medium body, ruby center with brick-red to amber rim. The initial shot of syrah fruitiness horrified me, but then the peppery, powerful, and VERY long finish took over. Bodegas Anima Negra (Winery of the Black Soul) makes another wine from primarily Callet, with small doses of mantonegro and fogoneau grapes, which I would like to sample (absent the Syrah influence) in order to sort out my impressions of the native grapes. Fruity syrah flavors, I think, detract from the powerfully peppery callet grape in this otherwise outstanding and unique wine. The 10% Syrah blended into the wine (of which the balance is 65% Callet and 25% Mantonegro grapes, fermented 85% in barrels and 15% in tank) was not a deal breaker, but it also did not change what I presume is the lean, sharp character of the native Mallorcan grapes. Rather than a mouth-filling, round wine in the Bordeaux style, the AN/2 seems to travel in a straight line to the back of the palate, whereupon the finish detonates into a crackling, peppery explosion. For the $20 that many pay for a decent domestic Pinot Noir, a much more memorable and remarkable wine can be had from Anima Negra. It enhanced our meal, and the singularly peppery finish of the wine is like no other that I have experienced. I look forward to finding a bottle of the bodega's flagship AN bottling for comparison.
In spite of my minor complaints, this is a marvelous, unique wine which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Unique tasting wine from fairly unique grapes (two of the three varietals are supposedly grown only on Mallorca). Tasted this at Mission Wines and ended up taking home a bottle. Faint but pleasant aroma of dry earth. Dusty, smoky, peppery, with a finish that happily dispatched a sip of lousy Zinfandel and kept right on going. I have not had a wine like this before and look forward to enjoying the bottle with my wife when our daughter arrives. This is exactly the sort of wine she has always preferred.

Grapes: Callet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha y Merlot Aging: 10 Months in Barrel (30% New American Oak, 70% is a mix of both 2 year old American Oak and 2/3 year old American and French Oak) Clean dark ruby/purple color. A lovely delicate nose, with strong black fruit aromas and hints of both mineral and wild flower. Incredibly silky mouthfeel with great structure, medium body and tannin. The cherry flavor still remains prominent on the palate but tones down slightly to allow for more of the floral and earthy tones to come forward. I would highly recommend looking for this wine because not only is it a pleasure to taste the unique flavor that comes from the native Callet grape, but also a fabulous wine to compare with your traditional powerhouse Riojan wine.
