Drank from a half bottle at Hinoki and the Bird $58.
Oh, I think so! Very nice elements of dry chard with some mustardy earthy things under the surface as it warmed up. This is nicely balanced juice and tons of fruit, acidity, and secondary stuff.
Will be looking up a lot of Gaja whites after this.

This wine has hit its stride and I cannot imagine it getting any better. A nose of lemon curd and freshly mown grass, this is more about Chablis than Chambolle. I pick up maybe just a hint of oak, but if it is there it is subtle. Other flavors include the aforementioned lemon curd, with some fig and a nice zippy acidity to hold it all together. Drink on the cool side, this gets a bit bitter as it warms but this is by far the best bottle we have had and I think at or near zenith.

This seemed a little more round than the first bottle. It feels to me like a cross between Chablis and Cote d'Or chardonnay. Nose of fig and perhaps some melon with a hint of wet limestone. The color is faintly yellow. A creamy lemon curd thing is framed with a good dose of minerality and lemon grass flavors. Finish is above average, maybe 20 seconds. I think this does not have a long life, maybe through 2010. Perhaps the mediocre QPR is factoring into my rating, but it sure seems like I could have purchased this wine for $20 less from multiple areas around the globe. Cleary the King's name on a bottle adds significantly to price, although I think this wine proves value does not necessarily follow.

Probably just an okay value but no overly so. After attending a tasting of '99 single-vineyard Barbarescos, 2003 Camarcanda and the 2001 Sperss and Gaja Barbaresco with the King himself, I decided to pop this in semi-celebration. Pale straw in color, the nose is of fig and stone. Plenty of acid, some nice citrusy fruits with a hint of orange marmalade. There was a slatey bitterness that I found offputting, however, which prevented a higher rating. This was especially prevalent in the finsh at the back of the throat as the wine warmed just a tad. Not nearly up to snuff with last nights Barbaresco.

(from memory) Half bottle at Spring. Nice full rich chardonnay with more character and spice than usual (blended grapes I'm sure). Good stuffing - drinking rather young but still enjoyable.

Armit Italian tasting (Lansdowne Club): Puligny not Meursault. Linear, tight, but lots of stone fruits, minerals. Long finish. Excellent, actually, and reasonable value. For a Gaja.

A big full bodied white. Initially the oak was still too noticeable but with some air it softened and offered up hints of vanilla. This seemed to be more earth and forrest than fruits.

Green tinged, lemon curd nose. This bottle almost had an overt sweetness. Green apple and bitterness. Not a good showing. Drink now, this is OTH.

The Sav Blanc in this is what makes it interesting. Gives it some acidity missing in white burgs. Great nose still at this age.

The Wines of Gaja with Gaia Gaja @ Handford Wines: £27.50. Lots of (good) oak. After some time less oak and more fruit on the nose and on the palate suggesting it needs more time in the bottle!
