  • Barrel tasting at Domaine Courcel (Pommard): Dense, brooding and rich nose. Wow, so much power and concentration. Rich black fruit with plenty of flesh. Firm structure shows in the finish. Needs 15-20 years. 90-92+

  • W/ Gilles Courcel.
Cask sample sent last week from their cellars. 400 year old family owned estate, all in Pommard. Some would say, the leading producer in the village. 5ha in Grand Clos de Elenor’s, 1ha in Les Regine’s, 1/2 ha in Croix Noir and ~1ha in Les Fremiers. They also make A Bourgogne Rouge and Blanc from estate plots just on the other side of N74 outside of the village appellations.

4 plots in Grand Clos de Epenots. Fermented separate, blended accordingly. Different maturity.

Shows some purple tint to the rim. Medium intensity of color. Barely transparent. A very generous nose. ‘Silky and soft texture’. Yes, soft texture, some herbal notes to balance out all that silkiness. Medium tannin, ripe tannin. Has significant body and concentration. Dark berry fruit aromas.

  • Lots of reduction on the nose. A bit angular and unbalanced on the palate, difficult to assess on the basis of this sample.
