A mature, warm and slightly faded red color. On the nose: dried rose petals, leather and leather dust, all secondary and tertiary notes. On the palate:acidity quite in the foreground, medium to lighter weight; a bit ethereal but still quite satisfying.

A Tasting of 1964 Gran Reserva Rioja and Even Older White Rioja! (Los Gatos, California): Significant browning. Baked sweet berry fruit and nuttiness on the nose. Medium weight. Mouthcoating entry with some fruit, high acidity, abruptly stalkier back end with a strident off note and definitely some oxidation. Borderline flawed. Like drinking a Madeira.

Garnet color, translucent, lipid, with some bricking. On the nose there are rose petals, leather dust, some sweaty leather and barnyard notes as well a lively, though well integrated acidity. On the palate quite suave and elegant, good tannin acidity balance . A fine wine although this bottle did not quite measure up to the last one tasted in June 2021.

Pale Red color; smell of lovage which dissipates and also some aldehyde. Much more body than the 1982 Paternina Gran Reserva; good mouthfeel, smooth and elegant. Finishes with a sweet, elegant note. Very pleasing; another very good wine from this producer after the 1952 vintage red and white! Retasted from a half bottle decanted off the original one: A wonderfully mature, smooth and refined classic Rioja of the old style. It does not get much better than that!
