  • I like this Carmenere’s from Chile! Bell pepper, mint, soft vanilla, plum, leather, green olive, licorice, medium body, tad young still, needs a few more years, smooth bell pepper finish.

  • 100% Carmenere from their best plots of estate vineyards; 22 months in 60% New Oak; They make around 700-1000 cases. Like their Sena and Chadwick, Kai has placed high in or won various international blind tastings against superstar wines like Haut Brion and Opus One. The nose makes you immediately think this is Carmenere, or perhaps Cabernet Franc because it’s definitely pyrazines but in a sweet and savoury way along with coffee. It jumps out at you immediately. The palate is vibrant with plenty of acidity. It coats the mouth but remains medium-bodied, fairly light and fresh, which gives it dark and red berry fruit. Some spice. Good length. Texturely, it’s smooth and seamless. It’s not as big, tannic and intense as Clos Apalta, but I appreciate the acidity, so that can help age perhaps just as long. Still quite young. I decanted it for an hour, but it’s still youthful and primary with possibly more to come. Ultimately, I like it more than most other top Carmenere I’ve had because it manages to pack intensity and still remain fresh and not too heavy like some, even if some of the other Carmenere have more complexity and are more ostentatious. 93+

  • Deep ruby color. Medium nose of ripe red and black fruits and green asparagus/bell pepper. Dry, low acidity, grainy tannins, palate follows through from nose. Medium full body. Good balance. Medium long finish.
