  • A lovely surprise. Opened late and immediately bursting with sweeet red berries and mint. The ample acidity supports a core of precise strawberries and raspberries, menthol and star anise. The finish is long and fine and there are no rough edges. A treat and a crowd favorite tonight among pedigreed bottles like Chateau Montrose 1982. Wish I had more. No decant needed for this bottle.

  • Rioja Montecillo in Magum Tasting (Bodega Santa Cecilia - Madrid): 100% Tempranillo, without skins and with 20% of French oak.
On the nose it starts very off, a bit artificial, like plastic. Herbal. Wood a bit intrusive. Medicinal if any.
With air improves enough but do not finish very well.
From the first moment it is better in the mouth, it has length and a congruous acidity. It does not get rid of that astringent note that seems to be typical of the winery. Another 82 which has been eating the good thing during years.

  • Darker. Quite dense. Seems the youngest by some way. A bit high toned. Spicier. Really quite fleshy and full. Not sure initially but this calms down, rounds out and relaxes nicely. Showing well. ****

  • Bellingham Grand Crew Visits Spain: My co-WOTN. Aged nose, youthful palate. Red fruit, floral notes, black tea. Later, the nose displayed an appealing smokey quality. Lasted hours in the glass without decline.

  • Beautiful wine. Crystal-clear garnet. Nose of red fruits, coffee, and earth. Fruit surviving well after 2 decades; crisp, clean with smooth mouthfeel and long, long finish. Smooth tannins late. Drinking well now, probably at peak but also suspect it will last several more years without significant decline. Far exceeded my expectations.
