Enjoyable wine from Bierzo in the northwest of León, not far from Galicia. 95% Mencia. We decanted it for an hour and paired it with burritos and it paired well. Not particularly complex, but delicious with dark cherries, and some black pepper on the palate, along with smooth tannins.

Very fresh and easy drinking, notes of red fruit and plum with some light pepper. Not much oak here compared to a typical rjoja reserve. Overall it’s fairly similiar to a Pinot or Beaujolais- very silky tannins.

Bright medium ruby with some purple overtones. Filtered Aromatics medium. Crisp red fruit, mainly cherry with some darker plum. Earth, a little funk and ash. No new oak Palate has a medium body. Acid medium +. Tannins medium +, medium grained. Alcohol medium +. Tart dark cherry, cranberry, finishing with chalky minerality. Medium length. Balance towards the alcohol Pretty good, seems a little hot on the chest from the alcohol, but this needs more time in bottle to come together I think.

Not 100% Mencia, other things mixed in the vineyard like Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Trousseau. 20% whole cluster ferment. Medium plus nose shows funk, earth, game, white pepper, red plum, blackberry. Palate matches with medium body, tannins, med plus alcohol, acidity. Dark fruit, tannins are young but balanced. Versatile for pairings, could use some food to open up.

Not rating yet as I know I opened this way too young. tight, tart, muted fruit...air helps a little but I think this needs a couple of years to be approachable.

This is better than average mencia, despite costing just $20. It combines an aromatic profile similar to syrah with the easy-drinking fruity, floral qualities of Beaujolais.
I would rank mencia at least as high as gamay in the hierarchy of red wine grapes. If you like Beaujolais, I think you'll probably like this.

Seemed more acidic than we remember from the last time. Would not drink alone, but went well with the Camembert. A bit surprised about the difference with the previous note.
Decanted 1.5 hours.

Color picota claro y bode morado.

Black cherry/berry nose with green twig and smoky mineral notes. Medium-bodied with a fresh balance; medium-length finish.
3/5
Labeled as 'Vinas Viejas' but still carries the same barcode as previous vintages of the regular label Petalos.
