Consistent with a bottle two years ago. Mid to full straw. Lovely nose, honeyed, biscuity and buttery with some ginger. Rich and full bodied. Long and complex. this won’t be getting any better, so drink up over the next few years. ****1/2

Mid to full straw. Lovely rich nose, honeyed, biscuity and buttery with some ginger. Rich and full bodied, flavours in line with the nose. Just lovely, still a decent mousse, rich, nodding towards the oxidative without getting there. Long and complex. Super. ****1/2

Drank last during a fabulous 95-97 vertical tasting during a Cantonese lunch at Jade Palace. Opened briefly before serving and removed from the ice bucket to warm up a couple of degrees. Very lively initially on the palate, then it settled to display fine bead. A real treat, very nicely evolved. Showed very well for a 96, as expected.

Golden color with small bubbles that lasted quite a while, despite the age of the wine. Wonderful bouquet and flavor dominated by toasty brioche with superb balance and purity, and with a long finish. Old Champagne is truly magnificent when crafted by top producers. Drunk for the Valentine's celebration with very tasty lobster.

Perfect maturity, acidity of the vintage has held this up and allowed it to develop the most lovely toasty flavour, almost creamy so perhaps it has more to go. A great treat.

Mid to full straw. Fine stream of very small bubbles. Buttery, nicely rich with a honeyed edge. Good grip and mineral line. Very well poised. Finishes well. Lovely and without the Pinot problems of some 96s. ****

Color golden yellow. Light, fine mousse. Nose toast, yeast and a hint of sherry. Palate rich fruit, baked apples, honey, hints of nuts and toast in finish. Note from memory of last night. One of the better aged champagnes I've had.

Pale straw with touch of gold. Fine bead. Expressive nose of apples, pear, redcurrant, nougat and bread. Palate very fine with lots of apples, red berries, nougat, hazelnuts and honey. Leads into a very long and fine acid spine with lots of matiere and drive. In great shape at 19 years old !

A delicious bottle of Roederer. Pale with very fine bead. Nose complex apple, toffee, strawberry sorbet and fresh bread are all in there. Palate rich with great elegance and length. A very fine champagne still young with some increasingly complex characters.

Just starting to show some maturity with lovely strawberry, apple and pear characters with touches of caramel, nuts and honey. Very long palate and fine structure. Excellent drink.

Drank alongside a 1996 Pol Roger Chardonnay. The Roederer was far behind in the comparison on pretty much all parameters. If I would not have had the opportunity to compare it may have passed at around 90, which would not have been appropriate.

Quite rich and rounded, bready, honied and yeasty front end with good weight across the mid-palate though it falls away a little on the finish. Unsurprisingly a little more mature than a magnum earlier in the year, but this is drinking well with more in the tank. A wine to carry through to food. ****

A deeper shade of gold now. Quite rich and full flavoured, biscuity and yeasty, but not too much so. Nicely acidic, as much as it needs to be. Very balanced and Goldilocks. Properly mature and in its prime, showing poise and breeding. dg

This is staggeringly good. Lovely golden hue; expressive nose; medium body, elegant, concentrated, multi-layered and excellent length. This champagne has real poise and class. At it's prime and with no sign of being over the hill. When young this wine can seem harsh, but given time there are few better. A stunner. 93/94. Estimated maturity: Now-2012+

"I Dreamed I Moved Among the Alesian Fields" (Eleven Madison Park): Alluring, expressive bouquet of dried fruit, honey, and toast is explosive from the gate, eventually quieting down. Very aggressive bead, causing a little, but not too much, radio interference with the sumptuous apply fruit. Finishes quite sweet.

Tasted September 30, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Riedel restaurant series champagne flute. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of biscuits, hazelnut, apples and pears. Flavors of apples, citrus fruits, “apple crisp” and peaches. Good acidity and body. Drink over the short to medium term.

Medium gold in color; This bubbly jumped out of the glass with hazelnut and spice aromas. It had a medium to large mousse and had a large amount of acidity plus some oak lurking in the background. In style this seemed to be a very masculine champagne and was a young brusier more typical of the 1996 champagnes that need lots of cellar time to complete their evolution. I would wait 2-5 years before trying this champagne again. Quite good.

Mid-gold. Buscuity nose. Vibrant acidity. Honey and brioche, turning to a soft lemony taste. There is a richness here that you feel will fill out over the years. Is there a delicate touch of oak? In any case there is a long and very satisfying finish that makes you want to come back for more. After 30 minutes it becomes richer and fuller; it may still be young but it's very approachable and it has developed significantly since I had it two years ago. This is a very classy champagne from a very classy vintage. ex

Similar acid backbone as the Pol but with broader characters. The fruit appeared sweeter and there were some lovely toast and nut flavours. Very long, dry finish.
