Decanted briefly. Beautiful blend with notes of cassis, blackberry, graphite, herbs, white and black pepper, and milk chocolate. Still tasting quite youthful and a tad disjointed, although not enough to interfere with enjoyment. Will this fade away or become more sublime with more age? Who knows?

Decanted for 1 hr. Might need longer. Very tight and tannic for its age. Blackberry and red fruit have become secondary to tobacco and cedar notes. Clean long finish.

Not overly expressive on the nose upon opening. There’s hints of cassis, ripe raspberry, dark cherry, wet soil, and vanilla. This wine explodes on the palate. Medium plus body, with grippy tannin and moderate acidity. This is well made and will last for decades. It’s delicious now but still very young and primary. Drinks like a 2016. Hold for another 5 if you have the patience.

Either my appreciation or the compexity of this wine has decreased over time. Decanted for an hour, still lots of mineral, toast in an aromatic nose. The palate is sweet black fruit, more mineral, tar and acid in the finish. This is a big CA cab in every sense. 93/94

Tasted with Pontet Canet 2006 (approximately same grape mix); medium dark red, hint of brownish rim; caramel and spices; dark licorice, tobacco, intense and deep, a bit of candy/sweetness in the middle, mild tannins, sunny and ripe, power

Another outstanding Colgin vineyard wine. It has a blend of grapes with cabernet Sauvignon having just over 50 percent. It is elegant, smooth and very enjoyable

No notes due to a night of wonderful over consumption.
One of my favorite wines of the evening but at this level we are splitting hairs. A wonderful Bordeaux like qualities but still maintaining the Napa essence. Holding up incredibly well for my palate and should for everyone that enjoys this style now 13 years into evolution. 94-95.

"Cult Cali" Night at Garth's Apartment in Philly (Philadelphia, PA, USA): Brought by one of the Attendees (perhaps our organizer, Steve?) to the "Cult Cali" night at Garth's in Philly. I know this had gotten some air at some point but I don't remember how long. The wine was opaque dark garnet-purple. This seemed to me to be rather tannic and closed and in need of more air or perhaps still very young. I got blackberry, boysenberry, oak/vanilla and tar on the nose and palate. A very "masculine" and "powerful" wine. Some thought this among the best of the evening but for me was "middle of the pack".

Decanted for CA Cult night at Garth’s. We enjoyed this along with several other massive reds. Lots of asphalt tar and blackberries in this one, on the nose and palate, consistent with my previous notes.

Raspberry, rhubarb and purple fruits on the nose with hints of mount laurels, lavender, lilac and vanilla/French oak. Big wine needing some more time for the alcohol to balance. Great grilled meat flavors on the palate with blueberry, eucalyptus and Asian spice. Minerality/river rock on the finish. Great structure and a long future ahead. Drinking amazing now but definitely young and still developing.

Whoa - great wine with strong mineral, graphite and red fruit on the nose and palate. Very expressive. Enjoyed with Mike and Elise and grilled chicken and hamburgers. Consistent with my previous notes.

Outstanding wine, great balance. Red fruit. No intrusive oak, herb and spices, some light mushrooms, smooth but still five or ten years of tanins to resolve. Caresses the mouth and lasts for along time. This is a long lived wine that is delivering pleasure now and more later. A decade from now it will be outstanding. Powerful without being a caricature of a California Cabernet, not that I dislike the caricature style.

sw3's note resonated with me, this wine was clearly very well made, classy juice, certainly had some real power (without being overdone -- as so many Cali cabs are), though I will say that any more oomph and it would have landed out of bounds for my taste, on that note - I think this wine would be really interesting to have in ten more years... it had both the depth/concentration and the structure to benefit from more age, don't open any of these (imho) until 2020 at least

Still tightly wound, but showing promise. Too much back end grip with tannins bitter and rough. Needs more integration, but if it comes together it will be special. Enjoyable and classy now and way better than I'm accustomed to drinking. 5 years may do the trick. Check in again in 2021...

At L'Opossum in Richmond, driving south with the twins for college. This is a huge monster of a red. Massively extracted red fruit and a hot nose, fantastic mineral, granite notes and a long finish. Delicious with fois gras and rack of lamb.

Sunday Dinner on the Beach (Yin Yang Coastal, Ting Kau Village, Tsuen Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong): Decanted for 2 hours - not enough. Totally opaque black-red in colour. Nose is lush and really deep - classic clean and precise Colgin signature. Similar palate - silky and succulent and very poised but rather too primary at the moment. Good length but can only get a whole lot better. More fruit-driven than the 2002 I drank with Ann Colgin a year ago. Preferred not to score it as didn't give it enough contemplation.

Decanted for dinner in North Jersey with special friends. The nose was an amazing burst of alcohol and fruit, on the palate fruit and complex secondary flavors - too many for me to describe. After about thirty min or so, a secondary note of cedar or tobacco emerged which complemented the fainter, secondary flavors and fruit. If there was tannin or acid there, I didn't perceive it through the fireworks of flavor. Everything was expertly integrated, sublime. Lingering finish. Near perfection.

Decanted 3,5 hrs. Lighter and older looking than expected, dense, 89;80. Heady nose of exotic spices, earth, mint and sweet black currants. Firmer structure than normally from Colgin and a bit darker and more brooding. Less of the exuberant, exotic, explosive flavors (although some is still there). Cocoa, cinnamon, Long aftertaste with pronounced bitterness but also a lot of sweet fruit. Great wine, but personally I prefer the more flamboyant style of other vintages.

hmmm. really dont know what to say about this bottle. really looked forward to this colgin, but it didnt show well. if not for the potential - based on name and other's eval of colgin - i would have rated this lower on this night. tight for sure, but still not giving much. nose was reticient. dark dark fruits are there as is oak and earth. but no vibrancy. palate more of the same. tight, monodimensial and really not much to be interested about. seems like there is a big wine under all this. will have to give it the benefit of the doubt as this bottle really didnt prove itself. finish is big but tight again. lingers for awhile but mostly based on the bigness of this wine. will hope for a better showing next time.

10th Anniversary. Decanted for 3 hours. Served with Buffalo tenderloin. Very tight and while it opened up a little over 2 hours in the glass the nose remained closed. Medium bodied with firm tannins. Nice flavor profile, cassis, blackberry, hint of eucalyptus and a moderate finish. I opened this too early, but wanted to taste before I decided on my 2007 order. 94 pts, with potential. Hold for another 2-3 years.
