Agree with will2wine that this seems like a Spanish Monastrell. Not a ton of fruit, but not too harsh with the tannins either. Somewhat complex/earthy, with no oakiness. Not bad for the price, but you can do better with negroamaro IMHO.

This doesn't taste Italian, and it doesn't taste like $12 wine. I kept checking the label to make sure it wasn't secretly a Spanish monastrell. If other Negroamaros are this good, I'll definitely become a fan of the grape. Dark, mouth-filling, earthy and peppery, with an element of roasted meat and some black fruit. Chewy tannins. Good on its own or with strong cheese -- not sure how it would pair with food.

This reminded me of a much younger Amarone. Had this raisin finish, but was very pleasant to drink.

Firm tannins. Long finish. Not much on the nose, but the mouth filling dry fruit makes up for it.

Nice powdery black pepper. A unique almost bitter almond quality about it. I sense just a touch of white pepper. Nice grip. Quite good at $12.
