Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • A nice bottle of wine, probably showing better ten or, more likely, twenty years ago. It is amazing how this manipulation of Sangiovese (or lack of manipulation almost…in some ways it’s little more than grape selection and plenty of time) persists. This wine was probably 20 years past its prime and yet yielded me as much pleasure as some of the 93 and 94-point bottles of CdP and Shiraz that I’ve tried lately (of course in an almost antithetical way, Spartan as opposed to Sodom, by way of example). Back to this particular wine…a light brick and color and thin in fruit, its tannins largely spent, this wine still offered a complex bouquet, somehow both floral and dusty (reminiscent of Sicily or Greece, a little bit), and still showed considerable flavor, although fruit had almost entirely given way to tobacco, leather, roasted nuts and dried herbs.
