Subtle aromatics of sous bois, spice, herbs, meat and prune. There was still some fruit on the palate. It was delicate, elegant and quite fresh. It gained weight and some earthiness with air, while the tannins were slightly unresolved.

  • La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Light but well balanced with more fresh fruit than can ever be expected from a 1987, even if the earth and mushroom notes (also very charming) are more prominent. Medium/good weight.

  • Sushi at Aoki. Bright red, clear, vibrant and just beautiful. This was an ethereal wine. The nose just took my breath away. Red roses, so elegant yet intensly perfumed, sweet cherries, raspberries, red kiwi along with lots of Arabian spice, truffle, broiled beef shin, forest floor. The nose was extremely complex. Palate had good acidity and structure for a 1987, but this wine stood out for its elegance more than power. There was just such an amazing avalanche of bright red fruit - red kiwi, cherries, strawberries. Manuka honey, chocolate milk, mocha, truffle, marzipan completed the experience. With an extended time in glass, there seemed to be more red tea, forest floor and tobacco, so perhaps an indication it would be in a perfect drinking window now. This is just a wine that needs to drunk on its own, and what an experience. A truly brilliant le Chambertin, and just shared happily with my 3 close pals.
