  • Blind Tasting 1978 - 1990 Ridge Zinfandels (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA): Ruby core, light bricking. Menthol and baked strawberry nose. Medium bodied with medium acidity. High tannins, leather and not much fruit. Dried out. (my 6th, group's 8th)

  • This was my second bottle at the Cal. Poly Pomona Culinary School offline. This still has some bright red fruit on it, but is showing it's age. A little past it's prime on the zin side, but the Petite Syrah (19%) in this is still keeping it together and actually still has some very prominate dusty tannins. As a result this seems suffer a bit of the "Peter Pan Syndrome"...it has grown old without growing up. There was about a 1/2 bottle of this left after the offline and this even held up quite well a full 24 hours after being opened. I don't see this getting any better as, like I said, part of it has grown old but the other part hasn't. That makes for a slightly unbalanced wine at this stage of it's life. But none-the-less, it still was drinking well and it was fun to try this. As a side, I must mention that this was bought at auction and was obviously well stored all its life. I rarely see a fill level this high and the cork looked as though it was only 5 years old, not 25! (78% Zin, 19% Petite Syrah, 3% Carignane) 89 points.
