Wow, this 20 year old Grenache was singing! Unlike a 1998 Ridge Syrah tasted recently (old and tired), this wine was young and fresh. Dark purple, almost juicy, smokey, savory, fruity, long finish. Go figure huh?!
Very Nice. ATP release.

Ridge: Dusty raspberry ganache nose. Big bodied and lower-toned than all the Zin blends. Faintly herbal. Good, but clumsy, low acid and boring for Ridge. Probably suffered being next to a number of racy old Zinfandels.

Typical Ridge brett on opening, but it blow off faster than most of the wines this age.
Alcohol prominent on the nose, with currents, raspberry, tobacco. Rich flavors of plum jam, smooth and chewy on the pallette. Tannin totally integrated.

This bottle showed much more oak influence than the last. Plenty of rich fruit, but this one is overwhelmed by the oak. Heat showing on the finish and a bit on the nose as well. One glass was the limit for me. Did not improve the next day, though the oak seemed a bit less.

Big blobby plush fruit here. Not enough acidity, though there is still a decent tannic spine to support further aging. Alcohol is high, but not apparent and neither is the oak influence. This (like much Grenache) wears on me after a glass or two. Probably a decent match for a burger or barbeque (no, I'm not looking to start THAT argument) finished with a sweetish sauce.

Blind Grenache Tasting w/ Ben Smith, Dick Boushey, Bob Betz, and MrBigJ (Wild Ginger, Seattle, WA): This bottle was an ATP bottling, and still doing very well. Nice flavors of bramble fruits and a little licorice note. This was fairly low in acid, and a fun little wine to drink.
