Generally love Fourrier, and the Cherbaudes in particular, but this? Not too much. A complete character of its vintage from end to end. Best aromatically -- there its quite earthy and alluring. Then you get the palate. If raisins and prunes are your thing, then party on. If not....

Even better than in 2011; an exemplary masculine Gevrey, poised, cool minerality in a lovely interplay with delicious ripe 2003-fruit, perfectly judged oak, excellent length. A very fine specimen. Fresh and vigorous but not for the long term.

Energetic nose, depth and warmth, spices and minerals, beefstock; good weight, a touch four-square, masculine, lively acidity, sturdy tannins but not drying, velvety touch and with sufficient charm and sweet fruit to be attractive too; excellent length, light but fragrant. Now - 2013.

Last night’s bottle of 03 red Burgundy was a touch reduced so we gave it a vigorous decant. It was a study in earth with two parts scorched earth to one part freshly tilled and the torrefaction continued with a healthy shot of espresso. The fruits were certainly ripe, dripping with blood plum and liqueur cherry flavours and there was a strange undercurrent of green bean, somewhat akin to what you find in many southern Rhone Syrah based wines (think Fonsalette). There’s good density of sweet and savoury things up front in the mouth but there’s a big void of silence to the mid palate. It finishes with a raucous noise of meat, earth and gritty tannins.
I know these wines will continue to develop but where they’ll end up is anyone’s guess. It also seems that in most cases where Allen Meadows has re-tasted from bottle the wines are scoring around his lower points estimate…were the 03’s a bit over-hyped in the beginning based on low yields and concentration?

Dark ruby red color; Fairly ripe raspberry, cherry and smoke aromas and flavors. Low enough in acid that it might have been slightly flabby. Short finish. This might be drinking early for a Premier Cru site (probably a vintage issue). Did not seem like a long-term hold.

2/15/2014 - nickyg Does not like this wine:
Unrecognisable as pinot noir. Overcooked, over-ripe fruit. Low acid. Balance all out of kilter.

At last a good bot. Shows its vintage, not Burgundian, but still I like the ripe, rich Rhonish style. Better the next day.
