  • Quick TN. Impeccably balanced in all regards. At it’s prime (but can go for much longer). Stunning and category-leading. Amazing stuff!

  • 1995 Domaine Zind-Humbrect Brand Riesling. Vendage Tardive. Alc 10.5%. Golden color. Wonderful honey and quince nose. Some orange marmalade notes and layers of Asian spices. Rich and wonderful with spicy Vietnamese food
At peak. Will hold 10+ more years

  • After a series of underperforming wines I decided to open a bottle with great provenance and a great reputation. It lived up to both. Grilled apricot, butterscotch and bright acidity, with a deep richness through the mid-palate, it resembles a gold capsule Auslese or Beerenauslese with the spicy richness and depth of sweetness. I think it’s time to drink, as there is a hint of volatility as the wine warms, but that’s only a minor quibble. The wine is strutting around like a general on the parade grounds, ready for its last campaign.

  • Second Sunday Group: Aged Alsatian Riesling Vendange Tardive (Neil's): Double blind. Aromas of beeswax and apple- definitiely has waxy overtones. With air, the bouquet tended towards lanolin, apple and peach. Nice complexity here. Loads of apricot on the palate; deep and rich. Terrific honeyed stone fruit carrying the lengthy finish. Nice acidity. Balanced. 93-94 pts.

    My #2, Domino's #2
    Group #2, 22 pts

  • Dinner at Fairview Dining Room. While dinner was quite disappointing this bottle kept up its end of the bargain. One of the most beautiful Rieslings ever made and still drinking in a youthful state. Deep gold in color, this wine was filled with exuberant fruit such as apricots, apples and pears. Superb minerality from its terroir and a little horseradish from the botrytis. Plenty of acidity nicely balances this legendary wine. 50+14+14+9+9=96

  • A crash course in Zind Humbrecht at Jeff and Dena's (Raleigh, NC): On so many other evenings this would have been the wine of the night or at least the Riesling of the night. Such an incredible wine with immense power and intensity to the ripe apple and citrus fruit flavours, and an array of honeyed, mineral, smoky, and more mature petrol and burnished notes augmenting the bright fruit here. The palate is a total high wire act - massive sweetness buffered by tremendous acidity, and somehow everything's in a perfectly balanced package with tremendous length. Fantastic.

  • Halloween party at Jean & Roy's house. My Peter Gabriel "Watcher Of The Skies" costume took first place in the voting and had this been a wine event this would surely be wine of the night. Medium gold in the glass, this remains the quintessential VT Riesling. Seemingly ageless, this has lost some baby fat in the sugar department but has always been a very balanced wine. Several decades ahead of happy drinking for this one. 15+14+14+9.5+9.5=97

  • Deliciously complex nose, which seems to carry a lot of botrytis traits(not sure if effected by noble rot) honey drizzled orchard fruits, jasmine, all framed by a terrific mineral core. Bright and fresh orange and tangerine flavors on the palate, and while the dark golden color had me assuming this was going to be one of those ZH palate heavy weights, I was quite taken with how light and feathery the wine felt on the tongue. Seamless and very precise, I suspect this had a lot to do with some serious acidity. While it couldn’t be tasted directly, the well documented ZH style of flamboyance and richness is perfectly integrated with an underlying tension and verve. I should add, this VT worked very well with the tables mixed assortment of starters, something I was a little apprehensive about before pulling the cork. Long and very persistent finish. 19 years in, I’d say this is clearly in a prime time drinking state, and should hold for at least another decade, perhaps longer.

  • Dinner at Elijah's, Wilmington, NC. Another dinner watching the sun set with a terrific ZH and Dena by my side. About as good as it gets. Very similar and consistent with previous bottles - in other words amazing! Medium bodied and loaded with green apples and mine reality. Long finish. Still drinking young and may still improve further but this is a tough wine not to drink now as the pleasure it provides is immense. A perfect match with the "Carolina Bucket For 2" loaded with fresh seafood. Is this my favorite off-dry Riesling of all time? That may be a yes. 50+14+14+9+9=96(+?)

  • Dinner at Vin Rouge with Steve, Barb and Mom. Medium gold in color, this wine continues to show extremely well ( and quite young ) with every bottle. Effusive nose of pears and minerality. Medium plus bodied with a long and lingering finish. Sweetness is well controlled by balancing acidity. My favorite Riesling? I could make an argument in that direction. Tremendous today but there is still upside potential. 50+14+13+9+9=95+

  • Excellent. Not as sweet as before. Perfect for dessert.

  • Dinner at Vin Rouge with Steve & Barb. Light gold upon pouring and gold is a great one word descriptor for this always amazing wine. Medium bodied with an apple-dominated palate. Shows lightly sweet with fresh acidity for a beautiful balance lasting through the long finish. Evolving at a glacial pace, this wine still has a minimum of two decades of excellent drinking ahead of it and remains my benchmark vintage for the Brand VT bottling. Stunning! 50+14+14+9+9=96

  • Acker BYO 2011 (Tribeca Grill): Apricots and spices on the nose. Lots of botrytis. Really good acid on the palate - apricots and marmalade. Good structure - honey and sweetness. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

  • I tend to buy the view that laments the ripeness levels on ZH, but, you know what, this was darned tasty. Deep, brassy color but still fresh on the palate. Drinking in its prime.

  • AMAZING!!! I am very partial to Alsatian whites, and this is the only "dessert" style I have had so far. This late harvest (vendange tardive) riesling would be a great pairing with a rich and earthy food, like foie gras. It has so much complexity and such vibrant acidity that it will stand up to a rich dish and it will cut the creamy or fattiness of the food with easily. I will be seeking more of this, and compared to its dessert wine counterparts in other areas of France, this is a GREAT buy.

  • Rednecks & Rhones at Greg Ellis' house. For me and my palate this bottle stole the show today. Medium gold in color, this was like drinking the mist coming off of Lac Blanc in Alsace not far from the vineyard. So pure. So clean. So delicate. Notes of so many things in this wine but most prominently apples, Laser sharp acidity on the long finish matched the moderate sweetness perfectly. Ultimately refreshing and to me the perfect way to end the day. 50+14+14+9.5+9.5 = 97

  • On the same day we had the Pinot Gris St Urbain 1996, the Brand 1998 and the Brand VT 1995. The comparison was interesting, and the overall "winner" was The Pinot ris 1996. Golden color. The nose is full of mirabelle quince and apricot typical of botytris. The smokiness from the granitic terroir brings balance and sharpen all aromas definition. In the mouth, depsite the age, ripe and confit fruits flavours are powerful and precise. The high acidity prevent any heaviness perception.
Drunk ith an apple tart frangipane. Nice match since the wine is not too sweet and quite powerful.

  • Deep gold. Subdued nose, needs a bit more time, maybe 5 years. Deep and rich on the palate, classic off-dry. Sweet peach kernal intial palate impression, but finishes quite dry. Good, but paled following the 89 Gewurztrraminer Clos Windsbuhl. Could be brilliant with time, but needs it. Outstanding, but will be even better. 94+

  • Dinner at La Residence, Chapel Hill with Steve & Barb. Light gold in color. Gorgeous nose full of minerality. Very delicate and precise on the palate entry. On the palate there is the beginnings of the sense of fruit floating on the tongue that the finest rieslings develop with age. Long finish. A wine that is very expressive of it's vineyard. 50+14+13+9+9 = 95

  • clear gold. Outstanding nose of powdered lemon granite. hints of loam. really lovely nose. Full bodied palate, noticeable alcohil, but not to the level of a flaw. palate is strong minerally lemons and peaches with the loamy noe persistent. Still has a bit of RS, although drier than in its youth. Long finish. Drinking wonderfully now, but should improve further and gain complexity with more time. Yum.

  • Dinner at 11st Street Dockside, Port Royal, SC. Back at this very casual seafood restaurant again. The wine was excellent but no formal notes were taken due to how I was feeling. Not numerically rated, but outstanding as usual.

  • Deep gold and dominated by botrytis. I got a lot of Brand and a lot of botrytis, but not a whole lot of Riesling. This is an intense, deep wine with powerful notes of clove and citrus peel, held in check with nice balancing acidity. The sweetness has toned down quite a bit, but the impression of over-ripeness remains (as it increasingly does for me with ZH wines). In the end, I was impressed, but it didn't really move me.

  • Dinner with Brian, Lauren & Bill at Elaine's, Chapel Hill. Pale gold in the glass this wine kept opening over the course of dinner. Terrific acidity and a very long finish. As with many great bottles tough to put into words but this was the one everyone kept going back to and saying "this is terrific!". A stunning wine with a very long life ahead of it. 50+13+14+9.5+9.5 = 96

  • Seattle Tasting Group does Quilceda Creek (Seattle, WA): This *almost* stole the show from the 1994 and 1992 Quilceda Reserve. Honey and more than a faint hint of diesel on the nose. On the palate, oh my, zingy and intense with dancing acidity and some saltiness. Wow, what a serious, serious package!

  • STG Quilceda Creek tasting at Eric Levine's house. Medium yellow in color, this bottle seemed to be a little less than previous bottles. Travel shock? Flowers and minerals along with a slight hint of petrol. Great sweet tarts balance of sugar and acidity. Medium to full bodied on the palate with some of the Brand typical crystallized fruit showing through. Long finish. Great wine but I know it can show even better. 50+12+13+8.5+8.5 = 92

  • The Great Terroirs of Domaine Zind Humbrecht (Raleigh, NC): The double pour of course #1. Both bottles seemed to yield similar impressions. Medium gold in color, this incredible wine may have been unanimous choice for wine of the flight. Amazing concentration and depth that really put the other 2 Brand VTs to shame. Lemons, pears and apples mixed with a great minerality that is starting to emerge in this wine. Sweet but in a great balance with plenty of acidity. Endless finish. Still drinking like a baby, this wine has all the right stuff to age for a long time and to be one of the all time great rieslings. Wonderful! 50+14+14+9+9 = 96

  • Dinner at Nana's with Nick. Medium yellow in color this bottle showed very well with foie gras but a touch behind the last bottle we had of this wine. Oranges, peaches and minerals attack the taster along with some light petrol and a sense of medium to heavy botrytis. Great balance and acidity with a finish that adds honey to the flavor profile. A stellar wine as always. 50+13+13+9+8.5 = 93.5.

  • With dinner at Duck & Dumpling. One of my all-time favorite wines and this bottle lived up to expectations.Medium yellow in color, the concentrated and pure nose explodes with green apples, lemons, loads of minerals and a slight hint of petrol. On the palate there's lively acidity and a mouthfeel that is both elegant and noble while at the same time being rich, viscous and sensuous. This wine was all about the incredible balance, almost floating on the palate. Had a very similar mouthfeel to the '83 Fritz Haag GKA, one of my reference point Rieslings. The finish seemed to last forever. Very youthful this wine has a long future and I hope I get to watch it's evolution as it will surely be a stunning wine over the next 20+ years. 50+13+14+9+9 = 95.
