  • First one of these I've opened since purchasing on release. Has a unique capsule, fairly heavy metal foil with a seal that has to be broken away. When it finally comes loose, there's the reason why: it's a glass stopper, a nice surprise and an interesting aging experiment.

Some color here, a medium light honey gold. But everything seems perfectly proper: the lightest of petrol noses, with some fragrant fruit underneath, then a very rich, deep and lush palate, pretty good acidity for balance, with ripe peach, hints of apricot, red apple skin, gliding on a long finish that eventually reveals some hints of minerality through the rich sweetness. I don't know if this has any botrytis, but it gives me a subtle sense of sauternes, without the bitter/metallic notes. All in all a very pleasurable, tasty wine. But as I am finding with almost every sweet Riesling I open, it's not showing me the hoped for complexity and interest with age.

Edited after I read a note I wrote in 2014. I didn't note the glass stopper, so I wonder if some bottles are cork, and some glass.

  • Open since 7/11. Getting near the end of the case I bought on release at Crossroads (yup). Medium orange in color (yup), this case started to show a lot of development quickly (yup). It's still very good though. The nose is showing lots of mature elements: baked red apple, some pretty spice, some petrol, quiet minerality and a bit of herbal. Even though it's showing a lot of maturity, it's got nice, mostly integrated acid and feels bright and lively. The palate is very similar: it's got creamy baked apple fruit, excellent spice, honey. Behind all that is some swinging 2001 acid and oomph. I didn't expect this to hold up open in the fridge for 5 days, and it's excellent now - so that's impressive. Finish is good, not great with baked apple, spice and a tartness from the acid. Nose - 4.5-5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 14.5-15.5/20.

  • Good ‘01 acids, moderate sweetness, hint of petrol. This isn’t very complex or long, but it’s nice on a warm day. B

  • Medium orange. Appears quite advanced, and the nose confirms this: ripe red apple, spice, baroque, creamy. Deep and ripe on the palate, plush but not heavy as the underlying acid is ok. Some quince, apricot, citrus and ginger. Finish is minerals, peach and peach pit. This isn't electric Riesling, but it is fairly well balanced, not soft, and it is tasty. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20.

  • You would never know this is well over a decade in the bottle. No change in color, the tiniest perceptible petrol nose, plenty of fresh, lush Riesling fruit, with some green apple flesh, red apple skin, wonderful acidity, and a nice dose of slightly tart saline on the long finish. A brilliant Riesling, though I won't touch another bottle for years.

  • Birthday wines at Anson's (Fort Collins): Very good showing for this riesling. Lots of zest and verve, with plenty of complexity, this was fresher bottle than some others. There's definitely some creaminess in there and some flavors of burnt orange showing that this wine has some miles on it, but it still has lots of youthful granny smith apple, some petrol. Very good length. I'd drink these soon.
