NobleRottersSydney - Oz riesling 2000 & older (Guillaume at Bennelong): {12%, cork} The notorious Clare 97 vintage strikes again. Quite a deep gold colour. Lime with petrol aromas. Dry, low-acid palate, light-medium body. Caramelised fruit flavours on the palate. A low intensity wine, losing freshness and becoming fat. ‘Brown sugar through the middle of the palate’ I heard someone say, but it’s not referring to sweetness! Drink now, along with the rest of the Clare wines from this “classic 20-year vintage”. Huh.

NobleRottersSydney - Old riesling night (Lucio's, Paddington): Sadly, the Penfolds isn’t much better [than Prospect]. Similar colour [mid-yellow], and a higher grade of diesel here, which is not nearly so pronounced. There are woody, oxidized notes on a predominantly front-palate finish of no great length or distinction. Despite all the early hype about Clare in 97 being a great vintage, it must be apparent by now that it was a spectacularly rich early drinker. It’s Archie Jackson, not Stan McCabe…
