  • One of the most compelling burgundies I have drunk in 50 years of burgs. A heart-rending song of deep red-black griotte-sweet earth-autumn leaves-tea-rose-sandalwood pinot nectar-perfume ...of near endless bouquet and palate. Only great burgundy can do this- lithe, lilting, elegant, yet utterly majestic, complex and demanding. Titanium fist in a velvet glove. Astonishing wine that shows Volnay santenots du milieu is a grand cru. This bottle drunk blind would make many romanees, musignys and chambertins tremble. I don’t know what lafon did in 1978 to make this wine- but let’s hope it can be repeated. The sublime made liquid. Well-stored, will go decades. I shared this with one of the greatest palates in burgundy, who has drunk most of the great burgs of the past 140 years. We both wept as we were enveloped in this elixir. And then laughed. To have known such beauty.

  • From Post Ranch Lake Louise cellar. Cork came out in pieces and wine was thin at first but developed beautifully over 2 hours. Did not decant. Turned out lovely.

  • Lafon Santenots 1969-2005 (La Trompette, Chiswick, London): Amazing! Silk, spice, so much at the core, sweetness, savouriness, mouth filling. Hard to convey how wonderful this was
