Decanted for 45 min prior to drinking. Ruby in color but with brick red overtones that gives away this wine's age. On the nose, it doesnt give out much. Almost closed but still some mushroom, fruits, tobacco box and very slight spices. In the mouth, it felt slightly bland at first but overtime started opening up. There is still some fruits and although the tannins have softened, it still has a bit of grip. This is definately on the decline, still enjoyable but I would not wait much longer.

Deep cherry red extraction, no noticable browning. Fruit-driven nose of cherry, blackberry and little raspberry with earthy bramble, leather, spices and meat. Very balanced palate with fruit following through from the nose and the spice turning to white pepper. Nice acidity and resolved tannins on the medium length and complex finish. This was a real surprise as I wasn't expecting this nice and nearly complete of a wine from a '97 CdR. Would be interested in the blend as this seemed almost syrah-driven, something I don't usually get from Beaucastel.

Lots of age.
Fruity nose, complex, tobacco notes.
Good balance, reasonable mouth feel, soft tannins, thin, very long.

Wine Education Service - Château de Beaucastel (Imperial College): Vague farmyard smells with a bit of fruit.
Fruity, lightweight, becoming flabby - not for keeping.

Mid-red with age.
Interesting meaty bouquet, some fruit.
Raisins, low in tannins, at its peak, medium length.
