Surprisingly fresh and focused given the heat in 2003, and 16 years aging. A hint of perfume on the nose, some cherry fruit, a bit of oaky sap, and a savoury/earthy finish.

Hot vintage..heavy terroir.....this should be a poor combination but this really struts its stuff very well right now - takes some time to open up, but after 2 hours there is a nice balance of power and density. Very clean and pure on the palate with no heaviness. Classic Pommard, with a broody darkness about it lurking underneath the surface. Good stuff. Drinking or hold.

Sultry nose of melted red licorice, red cherries, flowers, earth. Layers of red cherry, with touches of minearlity--indeed, some iron-tinged notes--on a body that gets steelier and sterner with air. I would recommend giving this some time yet, as it is really quite serious underneath the ripe overtones of the nose, and needs time to assimilate all of the disparate elements working in different directions here, particularly on the finish which is tannic indeed and perhaps some years from any type of clear resolution.

Burgundy Potpourri (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Medium ruby with bricking, not completely clear. Rich black fruit with rounder, liqueur-like feel, but this is not hot and the tannic finish snaps it back into focus. Not the most complex wine, but the vintage has given this enough flesh to tame the Pommard structure. Reasonable value at $37.
