  • Well made wine. I think the fruit is starting to drop off a little. Perhaps it is on its slow decline?

  • Dark ruby color. Cherries aroma. Still tannic and tart. I will wait another 4 or 5 years befor I drink the rest of the case.

  • Mature Rioja tasting (at my home): 24 hours after
    dark translucent red-purple
excellent high-qulity dark fruits rich nose, complex and light tertiary hints
firm integrated tannins, high acidity level, excellent balance & harmony, outstanding structure and complexity, tobacco, leather, light liquorice, already at its optimal drinking period which can last for 10-20 years.
I'd age it 5-10 years more to enjoy it at best!

  • Superb wine-much more integrated and balanced than 4 years ago (lower grade may reflect my evolution as a taster/aficionado). Notes of sweet balsamic reduction, coffee bean, dark cherry liqueur, some pepper and vanilla. Can go for another 5-7 years in its peak. Fernando Remírez de Ganuza is a brilliant winemaker. Kudos. Modern Rioja with respect to the past.

  • Drank at Puerto del Canario

This is an incredible wine. Had it in magnum format and still quite young.

Deep red purplish colour which we decanted for two hours.

Amazing nose of cherry, vanilla, aniseed, chocolate, tar and honey.

Very rich complex mouth with a medium to long length.

I definitely will try and get some more of this.

  • If the 2003 vintage tasted two tears ago was spectacular this 2005 is two steps ahead. Decanted about one and a half hour before serving the wine showed everything that I expect in a great wine: elegance, perfect integration of tannins and acidity, silkiness on the throat and fineness in every aspect of the wine (nose, palate, after taste).
Everybody enjoyed the wine, and the day after was even better.

  • I’m not a great amateur of Rioja wines, but this is truly stunning (unfortunately so is also its price). Grape varieties: 90 % Tempranillo, 5 % Graciano, 5 % Viura and Malvasia. The (gentle) pressing of the grapes was accomplished by using a “water bag system” (a membrane bag in the tank, filled with water overnight, thus the name “Trasnocho”). Oak regime: aged for 21 months in new French Allier-barriques. Decanted: two hours prior to tasting. Impenetrable dark ruby-red in color with some purple shades at the rim. Brilliant nose with sensual scents of red berries, cassis, licorice, cocoa powder and a fine touch of oak. The full-bodied but extremely well balanced palate reveals layers of ripe red fruit, a fabulous concentration, great depth and significant but succulent tannins. Wood is certainly a factor, but it is neatly integrated with the powerful rich fruit. Spectacular wine with a generous finish and a cellaring potential for up to ten years.

  • We tried two bottles of this over two days. Richard, with whom I shared these bottles in Madrid, felt the first one was slightly off out at dinner. Personally, I just didn't like it. Dark, dark ink hides the local grapes conflicting with ripe cabernet all ending with a bite at the end - it all just didn't work for me. The next day, Richard pulled out another bottle at home, and it indeed was much better. However, there still was too much tension in my mind between the old and new world styles, especially given the price...
