  • From another half bottle , this is definitely extravagantly rich to the point of snobbery. Rich ripe dripping creamy lemony goodness of batard. Somewhat a lil overpowering. Not the most subtle of wines.

  • My last half bottle. This is definitely aging faster than it should. Deep buttery yellow in color. This also displays the buttery creamy ripe lemons creme with vanilla whipped cream. Opulent and Americanized chard style with tinge of minerality. Time to drink up.

  • Lunch at Dezato (Dezato, Jalan Telok): Yet another 375ml. This was decently good without going anywhere near the standard of the best examples we had. I put it down to bottle variation. However, given the recent notes on the wine, it may well be that it is actually starting to shut down somewhat. This still had a pretty nice nose on the day, with some earth and mineral nuances shading into fleshy white fruit and sweet pears aromas, with some musky floral notes and a lick of creme fraiche at the sides. The palate was rather light for a Batard, with a little metallic twang underscoring its otherwise fleshy flavours of white fruit and cream. That being said though, this was still a wine of good depth and breadth, something that was obvious on it substantial midpalate and into its nice finish with its long, firm pull of ground nuts, spice and chalky mineral notes. Pretty good stuff, with a nice touch of acidity lifting the creamy notes. Just a flush of alcohol heat disturbs the balance somewhat, otherwise, this was a decent wine, if not exactly a Grand Cru experience.

  • From another half bottle but this one was really muted. Lots of almonds and minerals but tales a long time to coax out

  • Another half bottle and this one was in good shape. Typical richness from this plot. Ripe lemons, butter vanillin oak and slightly fatty oily minerality too.

  • December Birthdays (My Little Spanish Place): I have been told that there is a lot of bottle variation with this wine, and this was the first time out of 3 tries I can see why. It was not bad at all, pretty good actually, but nowhere near as good as either of the last bottles, or as good as one would expect a Batard from a strongish vintage to be. It started lots of creamy, buttery aromas on the bouquet, then almond oil, white flowers, fleshy white fruit and a touch of mineral - nice enough nose, just that bit on the oaky side for me. The palate was big, rich and almost fatty, with oaky notes floating around a deep core of neutral white fruit. So rich and weighty in fact that there were guesses that this was a new world Chardonnay from some quarters, while others actually called it a white Rhone. There is some acidity here, so that balance is okay, and the finish had a nice nutty, minerally length, but this was somehow a bit lacking in life and vigour. William put it very nicely when he said that there was weight but no intensity. In fact, right at the end, this was actually a bit floppy at the edges. Overall, decently good, but not great.

  • Public Holiday Lunch at Kel's (Natura Loft): I always thought this was Lequin's best cuvee, and this 375ml bottle showed just why. It was a good Batard and certainly better than most anything else Lequin produces, better even than the last bottle I had earlier in the year. There was a very nice nose here - ripe lemons, fleshy red apples, some creamy, toasty inflections, a bit of earth, tiny pinpricks of peppery spice - young, a bit modern, but complex and attractive. The palate was rich and ripe, almost yellow fruited in its aspect, with pineapples and dried mangoes on the attack layered alongside a good depth of apple and pear fruit at the core of the wine. It was nicely balanced. Not exactly zippy, but with a nice amount of acidity keeping the wine on its toes in spite of its obvious size and power. There was also a lovely breadth of expression, with the midpalate filling up with butter, cream, earth, mineral and spice notes that spread out alongside the fruit. There was just a bit of heat at the long, creamy, slightly nutty, almond oil finish, but that apart, this was very impressive - it may not have been the most elegant of wines, but it had all the power you would expect from a Batard yet no shortage of class. Excellent.

  • Well made essentially batard Expression of half creamed white fruits with balance and intensity. Delicious now and should age for another 5 yrs at least. This is really improving every yr.

  • General Election Results Get-together (A's Place): Gentle with nicely rounded with beeswax, creamy and buttery, grippy and deep finish.

  • 2011 Election Party (Alex's place): Pretty good. Ferrous mineral, beeswax, spice and yellow fruit scents accompanied by some soap suddy floral notes. Lots of freshness on the richly textured palate, with more lemons, pineapples, a serious seam of almost savoury minerality and more honeyed beeswax notes along with a spicy finish. This was so mouthcoatingly rich and waxy that I suspected it may have been a white Rhone. However, with time, some buttery Batard notes started coming out. Lots of depth, but this was very balanced, with finely judged acidity lending a tingly sense of life and energy to the whole package. Very young, and this should improve with time, but even right now it was quite impressive, especially given Louis Lequin's less than stellar reputation.

  • Tasted from half bottle. This is much more opened than last time with biscuit, toasted almonds and hazelnuts. Good buttery lemon curd fruit weight. Deliciously wafer rich and rounded ending with hints of minerality. Getting better with time.

  • Forceful nose of fresh wafer vanilla biscotti attacks at the start but quickly ovetaken by bright lemon curds. A bit of pungent stinky cheese a bit smoky. Still young and tight. Gets better with tine. At the start was a bit awkward. 84-87 pts

  • Alc lifted nose of huge white marbly minerality but also somewhat reductive with hot lemons in a car boot under the midday sun. Big and almost hard to drink . There is quite a big bulk of minerality with rich lemon extract . Dont get the richness of a batard though. Not the best bottle of batard i have had. Maybe an off bottle? or more time needed?
