This is a blonde Belgian abbey ale or 'Biere Belge Blonde' the mark is Anno 1240. 11.2 ounces and 6.5 percent bv. Very rich in color with a somewhat large-bubbled froth. Needs a good splash to make a head. Extremely deep sweet-bread notes with plenty of clove and rich hopping. After a few weeks in the refrigerator has almost as much depth as a Regensberger ale I had sitting outside St Peter's Cathedral in October, if not near as much finesse. One wonders how much appetite one can keep with this degree of richness, but there's nary a cloy!

This ale has commercial connections to the abbey but id not actually produced by monks. It is apparently made at Stella Artois Brewery, and for its kind and price is an excellent value and is quite stylish.
