  • 2014 La Croix de Carbonnieux

Still quite fresh after 10 years in the bottle! Really blossomed after about 1.5hr in a decanter. NOSE: pretty red cherries, cherry blossom, hint of wet earth and baking spice: PALATE: follows nose, M(+) acid, still surprisingly fresh, well-integrated tannin, hint of menthol on M(+) finish. Was a great compliment to a ribeye steak and earthy farro tonight. Think the Pessac heritage of this wine gives it a few (3-5yrs) more aging potential before it fades into tertiary territory.

Was delicious with grilled lamb chops tonight! Palate was a bit wound up at open - acid and tannins stood out. With some time in the air, the wine opened up nicely - fruit stepped up to balance other elements. Didn't feel like this basic cuvee has the structure to continue to age beyond the next 2 years. Have two of their 2011 vineyard cuvees in the cellar - hoping they have a bit more staying power.

  • 2006 Mendel Malbec Finca Remota

    * 1 of 2 bottles brought back from the winery in 2010, opened for NYE, decanted 2hr and served alongside beef tenderloin. Was a bit “intimidated” pulling this from my cellar to complement a friends’ 2000 Ch. Chasse-Spleen and a 2009 Clos du Marquis St-Julien but what a gem! NOSE: Lovely blueberry, blackberry and plum, some compote notes just starting to show, purple flowers, hint of vanilla. PALATE: follows nose, velvety yet surprisingly good acidity (for 17 years old) picks it up, tannins still present and well integrated. Paired very well with the beef. OVERALL: this wine was the groups winner at our NYE table! It was one of Mendel’s first releases after their 2002 revamp on an old family vineyard in southern Mendoza, grapes sourced from a single vineyard, 12mo in new French oak followed by another 6mo in new French for 50% of the wine. Winery recommended 12-15 years aging when we bought it, I think this wine could still have another 3-5 perhaps 7 years, but it’s in a VERY good space now. Look forward to trying my 2nd 2006 in a few years and seeing what my 2b 2007s have to say.
