1985 Joseph Phelps Insignia

Color was good and a live. It took three hours to open up. I have tasting some similar aged Bordeaux (not the big 5) and it will go toe to toe. Wines in Napa in 1985 where made in a different style. Even JP has changed. 12.5%. Nothing is in your face so need to focus to appreciate just how good this wine is 35 years later. It has aged much better than most of us.
Aroma and taste are more to non-fruit. Name it and you can imagine it is there. Finest is pleasant no standout flavors. You like it for the tannins and acidity being in balance. It is not getting better. Perfect storage since purchase as in 55 degrees and similar humidity.

First, it is hard to rate wines that are 33 years old. Do you use the same standard critics do and try to "predict"? 30 years ago to get this good of tasting Bin 707, based tasting thousands of wines, the critics would rate 95+. Yes, fruit is mostly gone, past it peak bu sound, good acidity, appreciate more for texture, acidity, not funky. Tastes and flavors are a function of imagination. Everyone said for 33 years old it is good. Perfect food wine. Do I have any desire to drink the balance of this case? No.
