  • 1986 Château Climens

Lovely aromas of pineapple and caramelized apricots, with plenty of honey, pineapple, orange on the palate, with a nice streak of acidity to cut thru all the richness. Not super-sweet, but perhaps a little chubby right now. The bottle didn't last long enough to see if air changed it at all. Glad I still have a few bottles stashed away!

  • 1998 Martinelli Pinot Noir Reserve Martinelli Vineyard

After reading some....less than compelling....TNs on this wine lately, I decided to crack open one of my remaining few bottles. Unfortunately, gotta agree (to some extent) with the bashers -- this wine's taking the double-black-diamond trail express down the hill! The alcohol's become fairly prominent, both on the nose and in the mouth, and the fruit's receded somewhat, with stewed aromas and flavors overtaking the fresher red/black fruits I remember when I first tried this wine several years ago. Shame. Not a TERRIBLE wine, but I suspect it's heading that way eventually.

  • 1998 Alois Kracher Scheurebe TBA #3 Zwischen den Seen

Quite a bit of dried, sticky wine underneath the capsule (which wasn't too encouraging), but this was still a great bottle of "juice" (more like syrup!). Reminiscent of a late-harvest Gewürztraminer, with lychee fruit prominently displayed on the nose, alongside sweet flowers and pineapple aromas. Thich and viscous in the mouth (this is only Kracher's #3?? I can only shudder to think how thick the higher-number bottlings are!), with dried apricot and peach flavors, along with a sprig of mint, and nice acidity which keeps it from completely cloying.
