  • 2004 Heartland Shiraz

I felt that the 2003 vintage of this wine was the finest sub-£10 Aussie red I had ever tasted - until I tried this. Extraordinary nose of chocolate, coffee and faint floral notes which follow through to the palate - the floral notes were strangely reminiscent of good Margaux, but there was no doubting this was Australian Shiraz, the pepperiness saw to that. There was also an extraordinary minerality about the wine and a vibrant acidity which made this thoroughly refreshing and nowhere near as jammy as its big brother the "Director's Cut". All in all, this wine was so good that I would not have hesitated to place it in the £30 - £40 retail bracket if I had blind tasted it - as it is, it sells for the ludicrously low price point of £8. I have rated it purely on quality, but if the price point was a consideration, I would not hesitate to score this wine 100.

  • 1999 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts

Having been let down by a few Vosne Romanees in the past I approached this cautiously- I suppose the lack of anticipation made it all the more enjoyable. I found this a lot more fleshy and less earthy than previous examples tasted (eg Moillard Les Malconsorts), the rich streak of minerality more than matched by extremely supple, complex fruit. Good weight and ripe tannins - the sheer elegance and poise cannot be underestimated. A really savoury, delicious glass - wine defined! I had heard all the fuss about Vosne Romanee for ages and I just couldn't get it. Until I tried this...

  • 2002 Château Gaudrelle Vouvray

Absolutely stunning. Lovely green colour tinged with gold. Fascinating nose of orange and lemon zest follows through to the palate - stunning, bubbling acidity...a touch of pear drop and quince. Remarkable finish - 30-40 seconds. Keep the bottle cool though - the second glass was slightly warmer and the rapier Chenin acidity began to overpower.
