  • 1981 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil

Opened at Angler in SF for my wife's 40th over Mother's Day weekend.

May be the best aged (aged 35+ years) Champagne I've ever had. The Somm had the giddiest of smiles when she popped the cork and when she poured us our first glass, I understood why.

The effervescence lasted over 2 hrs, the primary and secondary notes were still very present on the nose and even more so on the palate. Crisp, vibrant, acidic with some notes of lemon peel and green apple. It was so we'll balanced and in tune with itself. Pretty much the perfect expression of champagne. The "flavors" we're not fighting each other, everything was in perfect harmony.

If the bottle has held and not damaged due to heat and/or oxidation (as I feared it could be), it is absolutely in the most perfect of drinking windows right now!

Side note: I may have ruined my wife's champagne palate and my wallet all at the same time.

  • 1981 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único

Opened for my wife's 40th birthday at Angler in SF over Mother's Day weekend.

Bottle was double decanted and set aside, with the exception of the initial pour to make sure the wine was not flawed, we did not hit this bottle until about 1-1.5 hrs into the dinner.

Wowza's, I've had a lot of mid-90s to 2000's Unico's and I'm incredibly sad I did sit on some of them longer. The primary and secondary fruits, softened tannins made this just an incredible wine to keep going back to throughout the rest of our dinner.

Thankfully, I have 1 bottle left, and I'll try my hardest to keep it hiding in the cellar for another decade to save for her 50th.

  • 1995 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT

From PnP, this was stellar, but we let it decant another 1-1.5 hrs and then it really opened up.

Very well balanced with earth tones and herbs and a finish that lingered. Absolutely lovely bottle. Wish I had more of the 95 around. WOTN for me.

Opened next to an 84 DCV Lake, which was fire but yet unfair to the DCV because of how good the Masseto was showing that night.
